As the summer season hits full swing, many people are planning their long-awaited vacations. If you’re escaping to a far-away place, however, it’s important to keep in mind the risks involved with long-distance travel.

In particular, we need to take extra care with our circulation, which during the summer can often be hindered by hot weather, swelling and inflammation. And in the case of travel, whether by planes, trains or automobiles, sitting for long periods can be quite dangerous.

Researchers have found that long-distance travel can raise your risk of deadly venous thromboembolism (VTE) as much as threefold. In addition, the risk increases relative to the duration of your trip — by a whopping 26 percent for every two hours of air travel and by 18 percent for every two hours of any other kind of travel — even if you’re otherwise healthy.

But travel can be safe with a few precautions…

What is VTE ?

VTE comprises deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT is marked by abnormal clot formation(s) in the deepest veins in your body, including those in your legs or pelvis.

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot becomes dislodged and travels to your lungs, blocking the pulmonary artery and resulting in difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate and, sometimes, sudden death.

Perhaps the most important precaution you can take is to familiarize yourself with the symptoms of VTE. This knowledge can save your life.

Pain, swelling, redness and warmth in your legs are red flags that a blood clot may have formed — and sudden shortness of breath, chest pain and a bloody cough are all warning signs that it may have traveled to your lungs.

Who’s at risk?

Long-distance travelers are at higher risk for these serious events, due to the sedentary nature of travel, but other factors can increase that risk, including:

 • Being over the age of 40
 • A body mass index (BMI) greater than 30
 • Having undergone surgery in the past three months
 • Using estrogen-containing contraceptives or hormone replacement therapies
 • Pregnancy or having given birth in the last three months
 • A history of blood clots previously or a family history of them
 • Currently undergoing active cancer treatment
 • Having limited mobility due to a cast or a walking boot
 • Having varicose veins

Reducing your risk

Getting up and moving, if possible, is paramount to decreasing the risk of blood clots from prolonged sitting. But when traveling, that’s not always possible. But even a little movement can do some good…

In one study, researchers asked healthy men and women to sit for three hours. During that time, they were told to fidget one leg intermittently by tapping their foot for one minute and then resting it for four minutes. Their other leg remained still for the entire three hours.

After the time was up, researchers compared the blood flow in each leg. Participants had significantly better blood flow in the fidgety leg than the one they kept still.

High-quality botanical and nutritional supplements can also help. In my clinical practice, I recommend a Tibetan herbal formula that has been clinically studied for decades; published studies show it significantly reduces abnormal clotting factors and boosts circulation.

Other helpful nutraceutical ingredients include the enzyme nattokinase from natto, a fermented soy product and traditional food from Japan. Hawthorn berries and omega-3 fats are also helpful for promoting circulation and cardiovascular health.

Beets or beet powders help the body produce nitric oxide, a natural vasodilator that supports normal blood flow.

If you suspect VTE during or after your next long trip, be sure to seek medical attention immediately. Quick intervention and proper prevention can help ensure that you enjoy many more trips — and all of the long-distance travel they might require — for years to come. Safe and happy travels!

]]>
Calcium is an essential nutrient and many people, particularly women, take supplements to ward off osteoporosis. But calcium appears to lead another life — one that appears to contribute to the formation of arterial plaque and other factors that lead to heart disease.

A German study, published in 2012, found a surprising link between calcium supplements and an increased risk of heart disease in women. The study looked at 24,000 people and found that women, who were exclusively taking calcium supplements to meet their recommended daily calcium intake, doubled their risk for a heart attack.

Ominous findings, no doubt… but does that mean you should stop taking calcium supplements?

Not necessarily. Even the study authors warned people not to jump to conclusions. Because, despite this apparent paradox, calcium is an important contributor to cardiovascular health, helping to govern a steady heart rhythm.

So with all the upsides to calcium supplementation, this grey area between ‘proven safe’ and ‘proven unsafe’ can be confusing.

What should you do if you’ve been advised to take calcium to improve a health condition? Fortunately, there are several ways to mitigate any potential risk so you can reap all the known benefits of calcium…

Peak Blood Flow

Poor circulation can impact your eyesight, your ability to sleep and cause headaches, discomfort and swelling — among other more serious concerns. The tell-tale signs of a circulation problem are… MORE⟩⟩

Calcium’s downside

We’ve been indoctrinated from youth that calcium is an important nutrient — and it is. However, you really want to control where the calcium is going. Calcium in the bones is critical, but too much in blood vessels and tissues can be bad, calcifying tissues and destroying vascular elasticity, leading to blockages, high blood pressure, angina, heart attack and stroke.

Part of this issue has to do with the right kind of calcium. Many inorganic calcium supplements are not bioavailable for the body to utilize, such as calcium carbonate which can be derived from limestone.

Oxide forms are also poorly absorbed. These inferior calcium supplements can be some of the main culprits contributing to calcium deposits and calcification in the body.

Instead, choose citrate, malate or chelate forms for better bioavailability. These forms also are better absorbed if there is adequate stomach acid, something most of us often lack as we age. But still, there’s more to the picture…

Calcium’s best friends

The most significant caveat to the German study is that the people who were at the highest risk for heart attacks were only taking calcium.

But for optimal utilization, you need to take calcium supplements with magnesium and other nutrients, which can work to balance calcium’s potentially negative effects. This is particularly true regarding cardiovascular health. In fact, magnesium is just as important as calcium — if not more so — for maintaining bone, heart, neurological, and other areas of health.

Another important nutrient to balance calcium is vitamin K2. This vitamin serves double duty, acting as a kind of supervisor for calcium distribution. On one hand, it keeps calcium from entering blood vessel walls. On the other, it helps bones retain calcium, increasing bone density.

Natto is the highest dietary source of vitamin K2.

Vitamin D3 is another important nutrient that aids in the absorption and proper utilization of calcium in the body.

So if you need calcium supplementation, the best approach is to take it together with these and other nutrients to optimize its benefits and reduce potential imbalances.

Peak D3

Think food

There’s an old cliché that food is the best medicine, and it’s absolutely correct.

As is the case with calcium and countless others, nutrients don’t work in isolation. They have complex relationships with other vitamins, minerals and cofactors in their food-based sources, affecting absorption, bioavailability and activity throughout the body.

For these and other reasons, it makes sense to start any calcium and magnesium supplementation regimen with food. This can be done with just a few simple dietary changes…

Many foods are high in calcium and other complementary nutrients. Let’s start in the produce aisle. An eight-ounce serving of collard greens has 360 milligrams of calcium. If your goal is to eat 1,200 mg of calcium a day, then this will provide a nice chunk. Kale, bok choy, broccoli, dried figs and oranges are also good sources.

Seafood can also be a good source; sardines have 325 mg of calcium for a three-ounce serving. Salmon and shrimp are also rich sources.

Naturally, the dairy aisle is a significant source. Four ounces of part-skim ricotta cheese has 335 milligrams. Of course, there are also the old standards: yogurt and milk.

Foods rich in magnesium include items like dark chocolate, tofu, nuts, beans and green leafy vegetables.

The beauty of these foods is that they also supply a multitude of other nutrients, vitamins, trace minerals and phytonutrients that all work together to support optimal absorption and overall health.

When to supplement

Sometimes, food isn’t always enough to get us the calcium we need. There are a variety of medical conditions which increase the need for balanced calcium supplementation that includes other nutrients like magnesium, K2 and D3.

People who are lactose intolerant have trouble digesting dairy and need to find other calcium sources. Patients who are being treated with corticosteroids may also have trouble. People with celiac disease, or other digestive tract disorders, often have difficulty absorbing calcium. Vegans may also need to choose wisely to bring adequate calcium into their diet.

Circulatory supplements

Knowing that calcium supplements can impact your circulatory health, you can counteract that disadvantage with a variety of nutrients and botanicals that boost circulation and support cardiovascular health.

 • Ginkgo biloba is known for its ability to stimulate circulation and even protect blood vessels
 • Ginger, cinnamon and cayenne are also blood flow stimulators
 • L-arginine acts to dilate blood vessels, increasing blood flow and improving circulation
 • Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation, which can slow circulation
 • CoEnzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that can help reduce blood vessel inflammation and free up circulation

One particular supplement blend that supports circulation is a Tibetan Herbal Formula which includes costus root, neem fruit, cardamom fruit and other botanical ingredients. In addition to helping with circulation, this formula also supports cardiovascular and immune health.

So let’s circle back to our original question. Should you take calcium supplements? For those who have trouble absorbing the mineral or may be at risk for osteoporosis, supplements can really improve health and well-being. However, you should always remember that calcium should not be taken in isolation, but with additional nutrients that support the benefits of calcium and reduce many of the potential negative consequences.

For those who are not at risk for a calcium deficiency, supplementation may not be the best choice. If you feel you need to add more calcium, bulk up on leafy greens, yogurt and other high-calcium foods.

Remember, one-size-fits-all solutions don’t take into account our unique individual health requirements. A qualified integrative practitioner can help assess your unique nutritional requirements and guide you to the best course of action. I always recommend using food as the foundation of any program, and if needed, high-quality, multi-targeted supplements that provide a boost to help all systems function optimally.

Regular brushing, flossing, and visits to your dentist are essential for maintaining oral health. But equally important is your diet.

Recent studies examining the diets of our ancestors suggest that modern eating habits have dramatically reduced our healthy oral bacteria populations that fight dental infections. Instead, most modern mouths harbor an overabundance of pathogenic, harmful bacteria that feed on the processed sugars and grains ever-present in today’s diets.

For the best tooth-friendly foods, choose low-sugar, whole-food items, particularly nutrient-dense vegetables, and avoid processed and refined foods. Be sure to drink plenty of filtered water to stay hydrated and prevent bacteria from becoming extra sticky and difficult to remove.

]]>
Jim was a patient of mine years back. He had come to me for holistic advice on heart health. His doctors were recommending statin drugs to control his cholesterol, even though he’d never had a heart attack.

As an integrative physician, I occasionally prescribe certain pharmaceuticals when the patient and I feel it’s necessary. But statins aren’t on my list, and Jim had good reason to be wary.

However, with the best intentions, another doctor prescribed a statin for Jim and he was convinced he had to take them. He had always been an active walker and hiker; but a few months after he began the drug regimen, he developed severe, debilitating muscle pain and progressive weakness in his legs, including night spasms. He was unable to hike and take long walks anymore.

This is a tragically common, well-documented side effect of statin drugs, but it’s not the only one. There have even been reports of patients developing temporary amnesia or progressive memory loss and confusion, also believed to be a result of these drugs.

When Jim came to see me later in the year, I was struck by his decline — he had seemed to fast forward the aging process. We discussed ways to ease him off of the statins, but it took almost two years to restore Jim’s health so that he had enough energy for life. What saved him: His recovery program included a nutrient-dense diet, specific supplements, mind-body exercises, and targeted clinical treatments.

Weigh the statin risk

Today, a number of studies and reports suggest what many people have observed clinically: that statins can contribute to severe and sometimes irreversible damage to mitochondria, the tiny engines in cells that produce energy. Mitochondria are responsible for countless functions throughout the body.

Statins work by blocking an enzyme needed to produce cholesterol: HMG Coenzyme-a reductase. But in blocking this enzyme, statins also interfere with the production of critical nutrients such as co-q10, thus damaging cellular mitochondria. Symptoms of damage include muscle pain, weakness, liver problems, metabolic problems, memory impairment, and neurological disease. In fact, people on statins have a significant increase in their chances of developing type 2 diabetes.

Yet statins are still hailed by many as wonder drugs that can save lives by preventing heart attacks. It’s even been suggested that we add statins to public water supplies. Are the benefits really worth the risks?

Staggering statistics motivate statins prescriptions

According to the American Heart Association, more than 2,100 Americans die each day from a heart-related condition. Survivors face their own hurdles with lingering conditions like angina and congestive heart failure. Obviously, we should be doing everything possible to care for our hearts.

But we aren’t. Most Americans don’t fulfill the basic guidelines for regular exercise. And they insist on consuming the Standard American Diet (SAD), full of inflammatory foods like sugar and unhealthy fats. Nearly 20 percent of Americans still smoke. These habits invite disease — and not just heart disease but metabolic syndrome, diabetes, dementia and more.

Lifestyle factors matter. For example, a review of clinical trials showed statins were associated with a 36 percent reduction in heart attack risk. That’s the same reduction in the risk of dying from a cardiac event after quitting smoking.

We simply need to do a better job as a society of taking care of ourselves. This also means looking critically at the drugs that are all too often prescribed as bandages that cover up bigger lifestyle problems.

And importantly, there’s no clear evidence that simply lowering cholesterol actually prevents heart disease.

Peak Blood Flow

Poor circulation can impact your eyesight, your ability to sleep and cause headaches, discomfort and swelling — among other more serious concerns. The tell-tale signs of a circulation problem are… MORE⟩⟩

The real culprit

Popular wisdom states that high cholesterol causes arterial plaque to build up, generating arterial blockages and heart disease. But actually, it’s the type of cholesterol: oxidized (i.e., rancid) LDL cholesterol that contributes to this damaging plaque buildup. Oxidized cholesterol comes from eating cooked (rancid) vegetable oils, found in most fried and/or processed foods. It is also created inside the body as a result of chronic inflammation, toxins, and free radical damage, turning LDL cholesterol into hard arterial plaque that triggers more inflammatory reactions and furthers this vicious cycle.

Indeed, the heart disease real risks come from chronic inflammation, which oxidizes cholesterol, produces damaging free radicals and fuels uncontrollable scarring that causes tissues and organs to harden and lose their function. Large-scale studies now show that people with high levels of C-reactive protein, and especially with high levels of galectin-3 (both are blood markers of inflammation), have a much higher risk of heart disease.

Researchers have also linked cardiovascular disease to insulin resistance, the hallmark of diabetes type 2 and its precursor, metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance causes chronically high blood glucose levels, which in turn fuel chronic inflammation. Metabolic diseases are closely linked to chronic inflammation through a number of pathways.

Control inflammation, control disease

Diet is such a fundamental factor in both causing and healing numerous diseases, most of which are related to inflammation. In the case of cardiovascular disease, I am often amazed that dietary recommendations aren’t the first line of treatment. Given the choice between a lethal condition, relatively ineffective and dangerous pharmaceuticals, and eating more vegetables and fruits, it seems like a no-brainer.

However, this is just another example of our backward thinking. We seek expensive and sometimes debilitating treatments for a condition we could easily prevent.

So, let’s talk a little more about prevention using nutrient-dense whole foods. That means avoiding a lot of commercial products that contain processed ingredients, trans-fats, vegetable oils, sugars, and artificial ingredients. Instead, emphasize lean proteins; healthy raw fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, raw nuts and seeds; plus, most importantly, lots of vegetables and fruits. I particularly recommend green leafy vegetables and brightly colored fruits such as berries: They have the highest concentrations of critical phytonutrients shown to promote cardiovascular health.

These simple adjustments protect the heart while helping the body ward off metabolic syndrome and chronic inflammation.

Exercise is not an option, it’s a must

Next to food, physical activity is the best way to prevent cardiovascular disease. Stress generates inflammatory hormones, such as cortisol; and exercise is a great stress-reliever. It also promotes healthy circulation that controls inflammation, stabilizes blood pressure, boosts metabolism, balances blood sugar and contributes to mental well-being.

Some people prefer brutal, boot camp-like workouts. But they are hardly necessary to maintain cardiovascular health. In fact, they can actually contribute to chronic inflammation. A brisk walk each day can do the trick. Try to incorporate small strategies to get the heart rate up. Take a walk around the block, park farther away, choose the stairs over the elevator.

I also recommend “moving meditations” such as yoga, tai chi and qi gong, which have the added advantage of calming the mind while toning the body and reducing cortisol.

Diet and exercise are powerful medicine, and a number of studies have shown that heart disease can actually be reversed through this simple prescription. It seems like a great alternative to medications and surgery.

Supplements can help

There are a number of supplements that also benefit heart health. These work to support circulation and healthy blood pressure while helping reduce inflammation.

One of my favorite heart-healthy supplements is nattokinase, the powerful enzyme found in a popular Japanese soy food called Natto. Because it thins the blood, clears arterial blockages and improves circulation, Natto has been used for hundreds of years to support cardiovascular health. Nattokinase also helps reduce inflammation.

A good botanical is hawthorn berry, used to improve circulation and treat angina, arrhythmias and congestive heart failure. Hawthorn is widely prescribed in Europe to treat cardiovascular disease.

The amino acid L-carnitine has numerous cardioprotective effects and also supports efficient metabolism.

There is another supplement called modified citrus pectin that is particularly good for heart health because it works so well to control inflammation. A fast-growing body of research shows that one of the main culprits in inflammation and subsequent fibrosis (scar tissue buildup) is the protein galectin-3. In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration approved the galectin-3 blood test to screen for cardiovascular disease.

Modified citrus pectin is derived from fruit peels and has received a great deal of attention recently for its ability to bind galectin-3 and block its harmful effects. A 2012 animal study shows that controlling galectin-3 with modified citrus pectin reduces arterial hardening.

Taking responsibility

Cardiovascular disease is so prevalent in the United States that many people have accepted it as an inevitable part of aging. Sure, if we lead sedentary lives, eat primarily processed foods, smoke and drink too much, those behaviors will damage our heart health.

We can take a pill and live with the side effects, but we don’t have to live that way. While it’s true that people with a family history of heart disease have genetic issues to contend with, for the most part, it’s preventable. We need only to make the right lifestyle adjustments.

]]>
Fasting has long been a key element of spiritual practices and has a long history in many of the ancient traditional medicine systems around the world.

Today, intermittent fasting — going without calories for a period of time, usually 12 hours or more — continues to gain momentum within the research and health communities.

In fact, scientists and “health hackers” have highlighted numerous benefits that stem from some form of caloric restriction, including reduced risks of life-threatening diseases, healthy weight loss, reversal of aging, and rejuvenation across numerous areas of health.

Considering these trends, it’s important to remember that prolonged fasting or severe calorie restriction can be difficult — possibly dangerous. However, there are ways to reap the benefits of fasting, without the risks of going for long periods without calories.

The solution is to engage in a modified form of fasting, including intermittent fasting (IF) and fasting-mimicking diets (FMD). These methods are much less restrictive, and a growing body of clinical and scientific data suggests these modified forms of fasting can deliver important benefits for key areas of health, including glucose regulation, cardiovascular function, inflammatory response and more.

Emerging research on fasting

One type of intermittent fasting is termed “Time Restrictive Feeding” (TRF), where caloric intake is limited to a specific period during a 24-hour cycle. Participants can eat whatever they want during that window, though experts recommend healthy, unprocessed foods. One of the more popular methods of TRF is the “16/8” approach, where daily caloric intake is limited to an 8-hour window; the remaining 16 hours are the fasting period.

Published studies continue to show the benefits of TRF as well as other forms of intermittent fasting…

 • One recent clinical study showed that a TRF diet promoted weight loss and reduced blood pressure in obese individuals.
 • A preclinical study showed that TRF effectively reversed the progression of metabolic diseases in mice with pre-existing obesity and type II diabetes, even when the diet was periodically interrupted.
 • Another recent observational study showed that intermittent fasting, using an alternate-day fasting program for ten months, eliminated the need for diabetes medication in subjects.

Targeted antioxidants and nutrients

While many proponents of intermittent fasting point out that these types of diets are easier to follow because they allow for diverse foods, experts also assert that the quality of calories can play a critical role.

This is especially important during a “fasting-mimicking diet” where participants periodically restrict calories on certain days, with a focus on foods and supplements containing antioxidants and other important co-factors during that time.

Research continues to demonstrate the benefits of targeted antioxidants and nutrients in supporting healthy glucose balance, insulin function, cardiometabolic health and other related areas.

While the benefits of intermittent fasting continue to emerge in the published literature, it’s important to discuss specific dietary changes with your health provider to ensure optimal results. There is no one size fits all diet, but with slight modifications adapted to each individual, this simple approach to eating may offer a promising strategy to support long-term health and wellness, naturally.

One of the most effective ways to prevent breast cancer and support overall health is with powerful plant-based compounds such as polyphenols, antioxidants, flavonoids and other targeted micronutrients found in certain vegetables, fruits, spices, and other botanicals.

These unique phytonutrients offer unparalleled benefits including anti-inflammatory and detoxification support, hormone modulation, immune enhancement, and a wealth of other health-promoting actions.

A recent study out of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health showed that women who consumed more fruits and vegetables — particularly cruciferous vegetables and yellow or orange colored produce — had a significantly reduced risk of developing aggressive breast cancer.

Published July 6th in the International Journal of Cancer, the study surveyed 88,301 women, starting in 1980, and 93,844 women, starting in 1991. Analysis from these surveys showed that women who consumed 5.5 servings or more of fruits and vegetables daily had an 11% lower risk of developing breast cancer, compared to women who consumed 2.5 servings or less. One serving was defined as a cup of raw leafy vegetables, half a cup of raw or cooked vegetables, or half a cup of chopped or cooked fruits.

Fiber or nutrients?

Researchers from this group had previously demonstrated links between increased fiber intake and reduced breast cancer risk. But, this new data points to the protective benefits of cruciferous vegetables and brightly colored produce, independent of their fiber content. The micronutrients provided by these foods are believed to offer additional anti-cancer benefits.

As demonstrated by this study and many others, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, kale, and others in this family offer important benefits for breast and other areas of cellular health. These superfood vegetables contain an abundance of compounds including glucosinolates and other phytonutrients that work together to support healthy cellular growth, detoxify the body, help balance hormones, and promote lasting immunity.

Phytonutrient formula for breast health

In my clinical practice, for optimal breast health support and maintenance, I recommend a researched botanical and nutritional breast health formula specifically designed to inhibit breast cancer growth and migration. This comprehensive breast cellular health supplement is shown in peer-reviewed studies to inhibit breast cancer cell growth and metastasis, via its ability to influence specific genetic and cell signaling mechanisms, in both hormone-positive and hormone-negative breast cancer cells. You can visit my site to learn more about it.

The formula contains the active compound DIM (diindolylmethane) which is normally obtained from eating cruciferous vegetables. DIM is an essential phytonutrient for breast cellular health, with multiple mechanisms including support for healthy hormone balance. It also contains botanically-grown beneficial mushrooms, the bioflavonoid quercetin, an enhanced bioavailable extract of curcumin from turmeric root, and high-ratio extracts of Scutellaria barbata and astragalus root. One synergistic study shows that the proven breast health benefits of this formula are increased when used in combination with clinically researched Modified Citrus Pectin, another plant-based nutraceutical with extensive research demonstrating its critical benefits against cancer and metastasis.

Research continues to advance our understanding of how to optimize breast cellular health and support longevity. Of particular interest is the research pointing to an antioxidant-rich diet, regular exercise and health stress relief — all of which work to support breast health on the genetic level, while promoting overall vitality, naturally.

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, and statistics put overall survival rates below 50 percent.

Metastasis is a significant concern in colon cancer, as the spread of cancer can be fatal. Up to 20 percent of colon cancer patients show at least one metastatic site at the time of diagnosis, commonly the liver and lungs.

When we look at these numbers, together with the statistics on outcomes from conventional therapies, we can see an urgent need for integrative approaches to stop the formation and spread of this pervasive cancer.

Research shows plant-based compounds may be our most powerful tool…

Plant-based prevention

A recent study shows certain vegetables can help

Published August 14, 2018, in the journal, Immunity, this preclinical study demonstrates the mechanisms by which vegetables such as kale, broccoli and others in the cruciferous family protect against colon cancer.

These vegetables are high in a health-supportive compound called indole-3-carbinole (I3C). The study showed, for the first time, that I3C activates a specific protein called aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). This protein acts as an environmental sensor in the digestive tract, communicating signals to immune and epithelial cells in the gut lining, to protect from inflammatory responses and maintain barrier integrity.

Why does that matter? These effects are shown to reduce inflammation and related colon cancer development.

This study adds to the important body of data highlighting the value of specific plant-based compounds in protecting against colon cancer…

Inhibiting the spread of cancer

Another important new study shows Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) offers benefits in blocking colon cell migration through inhibition of oncogenic protein, galectin-3 (Gal-3).

Published September 2018 in the American Journal of Translational Research, results showed that MCP effectively blocked migration of aggressive colon cells, through inhibition of Gal-3. Extracellular Gal-3 was shown for the first time to play a key role in promoting colon cell migration and was also shown to upregulate EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) in aggressive cellular behavior.

PectaSol-C Modified Citrus Pectin from ecoNugenics

These important new findings add to the extensive body of published, peer-reviewed data on the role of Gal-3 in cellular function and migration. They also further substantiate the fast-growing body of research on MCP and the only available Gal-3 blocker with extensive benefits in key areas of health.

What is MCP?

Also known as citrus pectin, it’s a digestible form of pectin — the gelling agent you may be familiar with if you make jams or jellies. It’s chemically extracted from the peels, seeds and pulp of citrus fruits.

Emphasizing a plant-based diet and incorporating researched nutraceutical ingredients are two important ways to support colon health, reduce inflammation and help prevent cancer formation and metastasis. Together with regular exercise and healthy stress relief, we can create a comprehensive plan to support overall health and reduce colon cancer risks significantly.

Our most powerful health resource is a swift and intelligent immune system — and one of the best ways to achieve optimal immunity is with the help of miraculous mushrooms.

Mushrooms have been used in Asian medicine and other traditional healing systems for thousands of years, and today, modern research is not only substantiating the benefits of this ancient superfood but also discovering new ways we can use them.

Culinary and medicinal mushrooms are rich sources of unique nutrients and compounds that work in numerous ways to support health. One family of carbohydrates found in mushrooms is beta-glucans, which have an affinity for immune cells. But mushrooms do more than boost immunity; they modulate it, essentially “training” immune cells to respond appropriately to various triggers — neither under-reacting or over-reacting.

If this were all mushrooms offered, it would be more than enough. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

For example, mushrooms support cardiovascular health, blood pressure, and cholesterol. They promote oxygenation and circulation, promote vital energy, cognitive health, metabolic efficiency and more.

Peak Golden Oil

The golden-colored oil of the Nigella sativa plant contains compounds essential for a healthy immune system. That explains why it was documented in the oldest medical writings. But we don’t just rely on history to prove the therapeutic benefit of… MORE⟩⟩

Mushrooms are also natural detoxifiers, cleansing the body of accumulated waste, dead tissues, potential carcinogens. In the same way that fungi thrive on decaying matter, mushrooms seem to have an affinity for stagnant areas of the body, and work to help clear these areas. They act like “sponges” for toxic materials, and with all their other important benefits, mushrooms can be excellent aids to any detoxification program.

Many species are also shown to be an important source of prebiotics — food for human microflora — effectively promoting a healthy microbiome. This translates to digestive benefits, immune support and more.

One preclinical study published in June 2018 by the Journal of Functional Foods, showed that white button mushrooms support metabolic health by providing a source of prebiotic fuel for beneficial microbiota involved in glucose metabolism and homeostasis.

Matching medicinal mushrooms to your needs

As research continues to highlight the remarkable potential of mushroom species to promote long-term wellness, more natural health seekers and medical professionals are turning to this rich pharmacopeia for enhanced vitality and longevity.

According to the 2018 Supplement Business Report, the demand for mushroom supplements in the US grew by more than 10% over the previous year.

There are more than 270 types of medicinal mushrooms with multiple benefits to specific areas of health. So how do you know where to get started to boost your health?

For daily wellness, I recommend a comprehensive supplement combining ten organically grown mushroom species and additional beta-glucans.

Here are some top recommended species and how they help:

 • Agaricus blazei promotes immunity by supporting the actions of interferons and interleukins, proteins that modulate immunity and respond to threats. Many preclinical studies have demonstrated its ability to support cellular health. Agaricus also helps to promote healthy cholesterol and blood sugar.
 • Cordyceps sinensis energizes phagocytes, macrophages, and natural killer cells. It also supports healthy cholesterol.
 • Coriolus versicolor is recommended for its cellular health activities. This mushroom has also been shown to support conventional protocols, such as radiation.
 • Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) supports healthy cholesterol, promotes circulation and oxygenation of the blood.
 • Grifola frondosa (Maitake) supports cellular health, blood pressure, blood glucose metabolism and liver function.

Mushrooms don’t always get included in the superfood conversation, but they’re clearly some of the world’s most treasured natural health resources.

The post Can supplements help conventional prostate cancer therapies? appeared first on Easy Health Options®.

]]>
One of the most critical strategies in conventional cancer care is preventing treatment resistance.

Essentially, we must find ways to stay ahead of the disease by preventing cancer cells from becoming immune to the anti-cancer actions of chemotherapy drugs, radiation, hormonal therapies and others.

This is why integrative medicine can be so useful in the successful treatment and prevention of cancer growth, metastasis, and recurrence.

Published research continues to demonstrate the ability of specific integrative approaches, including targeted supplements, to significantly enhance chemotherapy and radiation, prevent treatment resistance and increase efficacy. These combined approaches are allowing for lower dosages of conventional treatments, fewer side effects, and importantly, significantly greater clinical outcomes.

The supplement that helps prostate cancer therapy

One powerful supplement demonstrating multiple cellular health mechanisms is a specific form of Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP), a supplement derived from the pith of citrus peels and modified for bioavailability and bioactivity in the circulation. MCP is increasingly researched for its ability to support against malignant cell growth and invasiveness, metastasis, and importantly, synergize with conventional treatments including chemotherapy and radiation.

What makes MCP so important to both researchers and health professionals is its unique ability to block the harmful actions of rogue protein galectin-3 (Gal-3). More than 8,000 studies on Gal-3 highlight its causative role in cancer, heart disease, and numerous other chronic, inflammatory conditions. And from this extensive research, MCP of a specific molecular weight and structure (between 5-15 kDa and esterification below 10%) has emerged as the only available agent capable of halting and even reversing the harmful effects of Gal-3 throughout the body.

Enhancing radiation treatment

The latest research study on MCP, published July 2018 in Integrative Cancer Therapies, demonstrates that MCP enhances radiotherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer. Researchers from the Laboratory of Herbal Medicine and Cancer Research, Institute of Oncology, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, and the University of Tel Aviv, showed that MCP sensitizes aggressive prostate cancer cells to ionizing radiation by downregulating the actions of galectin-3, increasing reactive oxygen species production, modulating DNA repair pathways, and reducing invasive cell behavior.

This specific form of MCP has been researched and used clinically for decades as an effective adjuvant supplement for cancer patient support, including prostate cancer. However, this is the first published study to show it enhances radiotherapy against prostate cancer. These findings highlight the importance of MCP as a safe and effective agent to support against prostate cancer growth, overcome radioresistance, and even reduce the dosages of radiotherapy.

Growing body of evidence

Previous and ongoing studies demonstrate MCP’s ability to promote prostate health. For example, a recent interim analysis from a clinical study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, demonstrated the ability of MCP to lengthen PSA doubling time and reduce progression of biochemically relapsed prostate cancer in 79% of patients. These results were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology 2018 Genitourinary Cancer Symposium.

As research continues to explore the multiple mechanisms and benefits offered by this simple natural ingredient, Modified Citrus Pectin is earning its place as an important adjuvant therapy to support health in the face our most critical conditions.

Men with relapsed prostate cancer have historically been limited in terms of available treatment options…

However, a new double-blind clinical trial on the efficacy of Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) against biochemically relapsed prostate cancer is opening new doors for patients struggling against this aggressive disease.

Published 2017 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the clinical study – which is currently ongoing – garnered significant attention with results on the first set of subjects who completed the initial arm of the trial. Data from this group of 34 patients showed MCP is safe, improved clinical symptoms and quality of life in patients and offers potential benefits against disease progression.

Study participants took 4.8 grams of MCP three times daily for six months. Prior to starting the study, all participants had progressively rising PSA levels. After the six months of MCP treatment, 79% (27 patients) had stabilization or improvement of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) doubling times. Of these 27 patients, 21 had a stabilization or decrease of PSA. No serious side effects were observed. Since all patients demonstrated an escalation of PSA prior to the study, the reduction of PSA doubling times is a promising result. The study authors point to the efficacy of MCP on disease progression.

While these clinical results are exciting, they’re certainly not isolated. A specific form of MCP with the correct molecular structure is one of most-researched dietary supplements being investigated today. More than 40 peer-reviewed studies demonstrate this specific MCP’s diverse benefits, including three clinical studies in prostate cancer.

So, what exactly is MCP and why is it so effective in prostate cancer and other types of cancer?

MCP is derived from citrus pectin and modified to a precise molecular structure using a patented process that ensures absorption and bioactivity in the circulation.

But what makes MCP unique is its unmatched ability to block the harmful effects of galectin-3, a rogue protein directly linked to the initiation and progression of numerous life threatening and chronic, degenerative diseases. Over 8,000 published studies now point to the role of galectin-3 in cancer growth and metastasis, chronic inflammation, the progression of inflammation to fibrosis, immune suppression, and more.

Galectin-3: Prostate cancer biomarker and therapeutic target

For many years, the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test was regarded as the gold standard biomarker for assessing prostate cancer and prostate health. However, research now demonstrates that regular PSA screening does not necessarily improve outcomes.

First, the PSA test does not measure the cancer’s aggressiveness. The truth is, many prostate cancers are slow-growing and do not necessarily pose a threat.

Furthermore, the PSA test may have trouble identifying aggressive cancers early. Essentially, it’s quick to detect slow-growing cancers, leading to invasive procedures that may not be necessary, and too slow to detect aggressive ones.

For an accurate picture of prostate cancer and prostate health, its recommended that the PSA test be taken in context with other complementary diagnostics. This includes the biomarker galectin-3.

In 2011, the galectin-3 serum assay was approved by the FDA as an active biomarker for CHF and cardiovascular disease. Research shows it can be used for assessing cancer risk and progression as well.

A 2009 study published in the American Journal of Pathology showed that reducing levels of galectin-3 inhibited prostate cancer metastasis. A 2013 study published in Oncotarget reports that galectin-3 serves as a compliment to better interpret PSA test results. Authors found galectin-3 present at higher levels in the prostate sera of patients with prostate cancer.

More than just a bystander biomarker, galectin-3 is seen as an active biomarker, meaning it is recognized as not only a byproduct of pathogenic processes, but a key driver as well.

Modified citrus pectin: The only proven galectin-3 inhibitor

Within the fast-growing body of research on galectin-3 in cancer and other conditions, MCP has emerged as the only available galectin-3 inhibitor. Regular citrus pectin is a complex polysaccharide fiber with repeating galacturonic acid groups and neutral sugar side chains. In MCP, these large molecules are modified enzymatically, reducing their weight to less than15 kilodaltons and esterification from 70 to less than 10 percent. As a result, MCP is able to enter the bloodstream from the digestion and bind to excess galectin-3 in the circulation and at tissue sites.

A number of previous studies have looked into MCP’s benefits in regard to prostate cancer…

 • A 1999 clinical study presented at the International Conference on Diet and Prevention of Cancer in Finland found that prostate cancer patients who received MCP significantly increased their PSA doubling time.
 • A 2003 phase II clinical study published in Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases analyzed the effects of MCP in men with biochemical relapse of prostate cancer after local therapy. Results showed that 5 grams of MCP three times per day for one year more than doubled PSA doubling time in 70% of subjects.
 • A 2007 clinical study published in Clinical Medicine: Oncology found that cancer patients with advanced solid tumors who were treated with MCP stabilized and experienced improved quality of life.

Synergy with chemotherapy

MCP has also been shown to increase the efficacy of certain chemotherapy drugs and reduce side effects. For example, Doxorubicin (Dox) is an effective anti-cancer drug, but it’s also a very toxic one with the potential to cause severe heart and immune damage. While the compound can be useful in treating advanced prostate cancer patients, the issue is dosage-dependent toxicity. Due to its high toxicity, it can be difficult to give patients a sufficient dose to inhibit the cancer without causing significant side effects.

However, a study published in the journal Cell Biology International showed that combining Dox with MCP increased the anti-cancer activity of both agents. MCP synergistically enhanced the cytotoxic effects of Dox in both androgen-dependent and androgen-independent prostate cancer, allowing for a significant reduction in the dosage of Dox.

When seeking researched adjuncts for cancer and other conditions, it’s important to note that the only MCP shown effective in published research is a patented form that contains the precise molecular weight and structure discussed above. This specification is critical to its efficacy, as larger weight MCP will simply pass through the digestive tract unabsorbed.

One of the keys to success in integrative cancer treatment — not just prostate cancer but many others as well — is the strategic application of individualized protocols based on a diverse range of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The use of MCP and the galectin-3 biomarker are unique examples of both. Galectin-3 serves as an important diagnostic tool which is easily quantifiable. It’s also becoming a powerful therapeutic target for numerous conditions, with MCP as a leading agent recognized for its ability to block its tumorigenic, metastatic and pro-fibrotic actions in the treatment of cancer and chronic conditions.

Every year or so, it seems that a study on supplements is published and news reports sensationalize the results with headlines like, “Multi-vitamins Don’t Work.”

Take this meta-analysis, published May 2018 in the Journal of American Cardiology, reporting that most common multivitamins don’t reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, critics were quick to point out a lack of standardization among the varying data sets, such as quality of ingredients, or ratios of nutrients. As one nutrition researcher pointed out, “they’re essentially comparing apples to oranges to say the least.”

Reports like these used to discredit supplements, and cause confusion among consumers by ignoring the more robust clinical data in this field – data that demonstrates the protective benefits of high quality multi-vitamins.

For example, a clinical study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association validates the use of multivitamins to maintain long-term health. The study was a ten year double-blind clinical trial – the “gold standard” in peer-reviewed research. Results showed that men who took a daily multi-vitamin significantly reduced their cellular health risks, highlighting the protective value of such formulas.

The truth is, numerous clinical and preclinical studies, along with countless clinical and anecdotal observations, have demonstrated that herbs, food-based nutrients, botanical extracts and other high-quality supplements can play a key role in promoting and maintaining long-term wellness. Combined with a nutrient-dense diet, exercise, healthy stress relief and other healthy habits, targeted supplements can give the extra edge needed to optimize wellness.

Basics of supplementing

Supplement requirements are based on numerous factors: health status, age, gender, family health history, occupation, diet, stress levels, exercise habits, location, environmental influences, lifestyle and more.

The best place to start is to consult an integrative health provider, especially if you are taking any medications. Even the most innocuous supplement can, on occasion, react with a pharmaceutical drug. For more information about potential drug/supplement interactions, visit http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html.

When building a supplement plan, we must also consider the many different aspects of health. Here are some areas that can often use an extra boost, along with some versatile supplements which can protect and support multiple areas of health simultaneously…

Immunity and inflammation

Our biological systems perform a careful balancing act between being at rest, taking action or even, overreacting. Nowhere is this more apparent than the immune response. A tepid reaction can allow pathogens to gain a foothold, leading to chronic disease. An overreaction, by immune cells and/or the inflammatory response, can have a similar result. We want to help the body find the perfect balance that avoids these extremes.

I recommend a Tibetan Herbal Formula to help moderate inflammation and immune responses with adaptogenic-like benefits. It also has natural antimicrobial properties, which can help promote dental health from occasional gingivitis, periodontitis; as well as other acute infections.

Another versatile supplement that supports immunity and healthy inflammation responses is modified citrus pectin (MCP), derived from the pith of citrus peels and modified for enhanced absorption and bioactivity. MCP is shown to tamp down unhealthy inflammation responses and halt fibrosis of organs and tissues. It works by blocking the pro-inflammatory protein galectin-3, now shown in over 8,000 studies to be a key driver of numerous pathogenic processes. MCP is the only agent shown to block galectin-3. It also modulates immune function and safely chelates heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic.

To support immunity and healthy inflammation, omega-3 fatty acids are also high on the list. These can be found in flax seeds, chia seeds, salmon, sardines, walnuts and grass-fed beef among other sources. A high-quality omega-3 supplement can also help.

Cardiovascular support

Again, the Tibetan herbal formula is a top recommendation. A number of clinical and preclinical studies have shown that it supports arterial health and circulation. In addition, its antioxidant and healthy inflammatory properties can support flowing blood vessels.

MCP also makes the list again. Because MCP blocks the actions of galectin-3 it is shown via numerous published studies to promote healthy arteries which of course reduces risks of congestive heart failure.

Digestion

Science is only beginning to understand how different bodily systems interact with each other. Research now shows that gastrointestinal tract is critically important for nutrition absorption, hormone signaling, immunity and cognitive and emotional health, and much more. These relationships are well known in traditional healing systems like Chinese medicine, and now modern science is confirming these critical links.

Each one of us has a colony of symbiotic bacteria that influence many aspects of health. For that reason, I recommend both probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics supply friendly microbes, and prebiotics feed those colonies. Healthy intestinal flora can improve digestion, reduce inflammation, improve immunity, combat infections, support respiratory health, and even influence mental health.

I also recommend natural digestive aids to help improve digestive function and alleviate discomfort. Look for a formula containing herbs such as pepper fruit, ginger root and cinnamon, together with nutrients such as zinc, and digestive enzymes to support nutrient breakdown and assimilation.

Detoxification

Our body’s natural detoxification mechanisms often have trouble keeping pace in an increasingly industrialized environment. We’re constantly exposed to dangerous heavy metals, pesticides, air pollutants and more. These health-robbing toxins fuel inflammation, threaten DNA and cellular integrity, damage the neuro-endocrine system and much more. Again, MCP is a top recommendation because of its well-deserved reputation gently chelating heavy metals and other toxins. Alginates derived from seaweed also help remove harmful toxins from the digestive tract. Together, MCP and alginates are an excellent solution to help address increased toxic body burden. Importantly, these two agents can remove toxins and heavy metals like lead, mercury cadmium, pesticides and radioactive particles and others, without leeching essential minerals like magnesium and zinc.

Vitamins and Minerals

I recommend gender-specific multivitamin formulas because they’re designed to deliver different ratios of nutrients that are helpful for men and women. Look for products that contain food-based ingredients along with plant-based enzymes and botanicals to aid absorption. Emphasize vitamin C (at least 5,000 mg. per day) and vitamin D-3 (at least 1,000 IUs per day). Multi-nutrient formulas that contain blends of herbs and botanicals for vital energy, hormone balance and other areas of health are particularly useful.

High quality, food-based supplements can enhance health by supporting the system as a whole. A carefully designed plan can go a long way towards promoting longevity and vitality; addressing chronic conditions and helping the body thrive over the long term.

The right foods can detoxify and heal our bodies, increase vitality and add years to our life…

But, the wrong foods are more like illicit drugs: highly addictive and dangerous. We can’t stop eating them, despite our knowledge of the harm they can do. It’s like we have no willpower left.

This is where a cleanse can be especially useful.

One major advantage of a cleanse is that it can help reset your diet. That’s because when you balance your blood glucose and insulin by eating nutrient dense, low glycemic (low sugar) foods, those unhealthy cravings driving you nuts often vanish. Plus, the increased energy and sense of wellbeing that can result from healthy eating become key motivators to stick with the program.

Peak Golden Oil

Support for Inflammation and Optimal Immune Balance!

So how do you get started?

A detoxifying diet serves as the foundation for a cleanse. And the first place to start is eliminating foods that increase your toxic load. For this reason I recommend eliminating animal protein from your diet during a cleanse, but if that’s not practical, then use a small amount of organic, pasture-raised meats and avoid dairy products.

Next, eliminate inflammatory foods and beverages — mainly processed foods, refined foods, sugars and sweeteners, cooked oil and trans fats, excess salt, alcohol, caffeine, and preservatives. Try to emphasize organic food to avoid pesticide exposure and GMOs.

Focus on organic fruits and vegetables, and vegetable-based proteins. Green leafy and cruciferous vegetables are high in nutrition and detoxifying agents like sulfur compounds and chlorophyll. Soak and sprout grains, legumes and nuts for better digestibility, less acidity and higher nutritional content.

Don’t forget your friendly flora. Every week it seems that a new study outlines the importance of beneficial bacteria for physical and mental health. Healthy populations of good bacteria aid detoxification, boost nutrition and keep harmful microbes at bay, among other benefits. Probiotic-rich, cultured foods may be the best way to help maintain our natural flora. In particular, look for sauerkraut, kimchi, natto and miso to help keep your GI tract, and the rest of your body, on healthy footing.

It’s also important to stay hydrated. Drink at least 64 oz. of fluids — mainly filtered water, herbal teas and low-sodium, homemade vegetable broths. Avoid carbonation as it can interfere with digestion. Fruit juice is also off the list, since it can spike blood sugar and thus, inflammation. When the body is well-hydrated, cravings can also diminish.

Bind toxins in the circulation and digestion

One concern with many popular detox programs is that they are positioned as a quick fix. But detox is not a quick process and trying to speed it up can cause problems, aka, a “detox crisis.” Some experts claim such a crisis is a sign the program is working. However, the reality is that people can become weak from the oxidative stress that occurs with methods like extended fasting or harsh detox formulas, which often cause toxins to be released from tissues too quickly. The body doesn’t have a chance to process these toxins, and they get redistributed. In the meantime, you’ll get symptoms like headaches, fatigue, flu symptoms and others as the body struggles to manage the sudden increase in circulating toxins.

On the other hand, if the burden of toxins being released into our circulation is managed properly, we can achieve a much more thorough cleanse with little to no side effects. For this we turn to natural binding agents.

So after adopting a cleansing diet for a week or so, the next step is to begin cleansing the blood and digestive tract with specific compounds that bind and safely eliminate toxins. This strategy helps to clear the way for a more in-depth detox of organs and tissues. It’s kind of like sweeping out surface debris before doing a deeper cleaning.

There are several gentle supplements which can support this preliminary cleansing process. My top recommendation is clinically researched blend of modified citrus pectin (MCP) from citrus peels and alginates from seaweed. This formula is designed to bind and remove toxic metals, environmental toxins and radioactive isotopes from the circulation and digestive tract, without removing essential minerals.

Another class of supplements that are extremely beneficial in numerous areas of health, including detox, is medicinal mushrooms. They act like sponges, traveling to hard to reach areas of the body to mop up toxins and pathogens, and support repair and restoration.

Mushrooms, MCP and alginates are key detox agents that work to physically bind toxins in the circulation, digestive tract and other areas, and safely eliminate them through the urinary tract and bowels. This prepares the body for deeper detoxification using botanicals and nutrients that enhance the detox functions of the liver, kidneys, skin and other organs of elimination, effectively optimizing the body’s natural detox abilities.

Support detox organs

After you’ve incorporated a cleansing diet and natural binding agents to help clear out toxins, you’re ready to add targeted detox ingredients that encourage more in-depth detoxification. Some people proceed to this step after just a few days, for others, it may be a few weeks or longer. It depends on your health, toxic burden, and other factors.

For this next step, I recommend adding ingredients such as milk thistle, dandelion, astragalus, gingko, MSM, lipoic acid, N-Acetyl cysteine and other compounds that support and enhance detox capacity, right down to the genetic level. By stimulating and optimizing the detox functions of the liver, kidneys, skin, GI tract, lungs and other organs, these ingredients allow for a deeper, more thorough removal of toxins from tissues and organs. These compounds also contain powerful antioxidants to combat the oxidative stress that can occur during intense detoxification.

Another way to promote detox is to regularly exercise, which is essential in removing toxins and bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissues. Movement and massage are what stimulates our lymphatic system to remove toxins and encourage healthy immunity.

Strengthen willpower and enhance your detox with meditation

Simple meditation practice is an excellent way to enhance your detox program. It allows for a release of old patterns and energies, refreshes the mind and renews the spirit. Give yourself some quiet time to contemplate what you want to release and let go of. Sitting comfortably, focus your breath on a specific object in front of you, like a stone or candle. As you breathe in, visualize nourishment and light entering your body through your breath, and as you breathe out, visualize the release of all that no longer serves you. Continue for ten to twenty minutes if possible. At the end of your meditation, dedicate the merit generated by your practice to benefit all beings. This last part helps keep an open heart and connectivity, essential components of healing and rejuvenation.

Breathing is a central detox function, so practicing deep breathing exercises not only can help us relax, but also reduce toxic body burden. Furthermore, when we alleviate stress, our inflammatory and oxidative markers go down, which helps reduce toxic body burden and increase our detox capacities. It is also shown to help strengthen willpower and support healthier choices.

The balance between detox and nourishment is a central concept to life, as fundamental as breathing. And in today’s era, detox support is more important than ever — but it doesn’t have to be complicated. With these simple steps: diet, binding and elimination, and enhancing detox capacity, we can safely and effectively remove toxins, prevent their accumulation, and bring more health into our lives.

Whoever said, “Traveling is good medicine,” never spent time on a cramped plane or in a crowded airport.

While it may be true that traveling is beneficial in the sense that it challenges the brain with new experiences and different environments, it can also take its toll.

Particular risks come into play if you have a preexisting health condition such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or have recently undergone surgery. These and other factors can make long-distance travel potentially dangerous for a number of reasons.

The good news is that there are specific measures you can take to ensure your journey is as perfect as your destination, and promote long-term health in the process.

Circulation is key

Good circulation is essential for delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout your body. When you sit in one position for a long period of time – especially a cramped position as is usually the case on a plane – your circulation, particularly in your legs, becomes impaired. Combined with air pressure from flying, sluggish circulation in your legs can result in swollen feet and blocked blood flow.

Here are a few ways to support healthy circulation while travelling:

 • Move around: If you’re on a plane, opt for an aisle seat so you can get up, stretch and move around from time to time.
 • Hydrate: Dehydration can thicken the blood and slow circulation, so drink plenty of water before, during and after your trip.
 • Eat some curry: Turmeric, a common spice in curry, has in it a phytochemical called curcumin which is known for a variety of health benefits, including circulation support.* Both turmeric and curcumin can also be found in supplement form.
 • Drink ginger tea: The wonderfully warming ginger root is known to support circulation. It also promotes healthy digestion and occasional nausea, which is a plus for those of you who experience travel sickness!* Bring some fresh slices with you so you can add them to tea or plain hot water.

In my practice, I use a comprehensive Tibetan herbal formula backed by decades of clinical research showing its support for healthy cardiovascular, immune and circulatory systems. This formula can help reduce the inflammation and other factors that threaten you during extended sedentary periods.

Support circadian rhythms and prevent jet lag

Your body doesn’t understand it: Even though it may only be 8pm where you came from, it isn’t 8pm where you are now. Help your body adjust to the time differences when you arrive at your destination and when you return home.

Harmonize your sleep: Small amounts of melatonin can help you get to sleep at the right local time, to help re-set your internal clock. In addition, pure honokiol is a gentle way to help you relax and get some rest. This unique compound, derived from Magnolia officinalis bark, also has numerous additional benefits related to neurological health, anti-cancer activity and much more. It’s shown to offer significant support for a healthy mood and works by reducing anxiety, which can be helpful when you’re navigating new ground.

Bolster immunity

A strong, healthy immune system is important all year long, but especially when you travel. Be sure to stay hydrated with lots of filtered water to flush your body and keep your immune system running smoothly. Get enough rest before and during your trip. In addition, the nutraceuticals listed below have been shown to offer targeted support for your immune system, to help keep you healthy and energized throughout your trip.

Medicinal mushrooms are ideal immune modulators. They help to train immune cells to function more efficiently and effectively against microbes and other pathogens. They can also support vital energy for extra endurance. I recommend a unique medicinal mushroom formula that contains 6 botanically-enhanced mushrooms, grown on a medium containing immune supporting herbs that support overall wellness and immune health.

Shield yourself from radiation

No matter how you may try to avoid it, we are all exposed to radiation – both natural and man-made. Natural radiation comes from components of the Earth’s crust, x-rays, outer space and more. So why should you be concerned about radiation while traveling?

There is a large amount of radiation in outer space (known as cosmic radiation) that reaches the Earth. Normally, the Earth’s atmosphere protects us significantly from the effects of cosmic radiation. However, as you increase in altitude, the Earth’s atmosphere becomes thinner, decreasing its protective abilities. As a result, air travel exposes us to much higher levels of radiation. This may be of particular concern to airline workers and frequent flyers.

Protect yourself from radiation with targeted detoxification and free-radical scavenging formulas. Look for blends that contain antioxidant-rich botanicals such as boswellia, green tea and blueberry extracts, cats claw and others, that help protect DNA and cellular health against damaging radiation and oxidation.

Support digestive strength

Foreign locations often expose us to new bacteria, parasites and fungi that the immune system isn’t used to. Strengthen your digestion and create a protective internal environment to help avoid any unexpected digestive discomfort.

Ingredients such as clove, black walnut, garlic, pumpkin seeds, goldenseal, MSM and others can kill parasites directly and create an inhospitable environment for them, while helping to maintain your overall health.

Probiotic supplements include live beneficial organisms, such as bacteria and beneficial yeast, which are known to protect intestinal health, assist digestion and support the immune system, among other benefits. Probiotics can be found in yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and other foods, as well as in supplement form.

I also recommend an integrative digestive formula that contains botanicals, enzymes and nutrients to protect the GI tract against microbes, alleviate digestive discomfort, and help rebuild long-term digestive health.

With more and more people traveling for work, leisure, family and other reasons, we can expect to see exciting new breakthroughs in this field. Stay tuned for news on innovative measures that can help improve health and safety when you travel, better protect passengers, and promote long-term health no matter where you are.

The post The surge in Lyme disease: Should you worry? appeared first on Easy Health Options®.

]]>
It’s estimated that Lyme disease infects roughly 300,000 people annually in the US, yet only about 30,000 cases are actually diagnosed. And these numbers appear to be skyrocketing. A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that infections from ticks and other insects have tripled in recent years.

If Lyme disease is detected early, standard treatment involves a heavy round of antibiotics. However, delayed treatment can lead to a chronic, debilitating condition that often persists for decades.

To complicate matters, many Lyme cases are misdiagnosed because the infection can be difficult to test for.

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which likes to hide inside cells, making treatment difficult. This is further complicated by the limitations of diagnostic tests, which tend to be more accurate three or more weeks after infection.

Chronic Lyme disease is characterized by a number of inflammatory and degenerative processes in the body, particularly in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The bacterium can develop antibiotic resistance and even hide in the brain, where the blood/brain barrier blocks antibiotics. Over time, Lyme disease can significantly impair the immune system, making people vulnerable to other co-infections.

For these reasons, the treatment of Lyme disease calls for an integrative approach. Impaired immunity, inflammation, neurological damage, heavy metal burden and co-infections are key areas to address. It’s critical to work with a Lyme-literate health provider who can design a dynamic and individualized treatment program.

Detoxification and immunity

A key step in any integrative Lyme protocol is gentle detoxification. Heavy metals, environmental toxins, mold and other toxic accumulations can aggravate chronic inflammation and cause inappropriate or suppressed immune responses. A gentle detox program can strengthen immunity against the Lyme bacterium and other possible co-infections. It also helps prepare the body for successful intervention with other treatments.

Medicinal mushrooms are also valuable in the treatment of Lyme. They can be used to balance and optimize immune response, help absorb toxins, and offer targeted support for key organs and systems. They can help train the immune system, increasing its efficiency and efficacy and helping to downregulate inappropriate autoimmune responses.

Inflammation and infection

One botanical formula that can be helpful against Lyme is a combination of artemisinin compound, whole Sweet Wormwood herb, and a 10:1 Sweet Wormwood extract. This comprehensive blend targets B. burgdorferi with synergistic, whole-herb benefits beyond artemisinin alone.

Diet is a critical factor in controlling inflammation, optimizing detoxification and supporting immunity. Low glycemic index (low sugar/starch) foods including green vegetables, high quality sources of protein, raw nuts and seeds, and sprouted grains/legumes, can help cool inflammation, enhance immunity and support overall vitality.

Lyme disease is a complicated condition, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless. By integrating conventional protocols like antibiotics (especially in the early stages), together with complementary approaches and targeted supplements, we can help optimize health and vitality over time.

Healthy blood flow is one of the keys to long-term wellness. It helps transport nutrients and oxygen to organs while removing waste and toxins. Strong circulation also supports healthy immune response and energy levels. Without good blood flow, health can come to a grinding halt.

In addition to a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, there are a number of specific foods, herbs and supplements that can help support proper blood flow and promote long-term cardiovascular health.

One diet that has received particular attention for its cardiovascular benefits is the Mediterranean diet. This specific diet emphasizes an abundance of fresh vegetables, fatty fish, olives, olive oil and other sources of healthy fats such as avocado, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. Importantly, it limits processed foods, unhealthy trans fats, deep-fried foods, and other pro-inflammatory items.

The take on fatty fish

An interesting new study highlights some of the cardiovascular benefits offered by fatty fish. Published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, the study shows that eating fatty fish such as salmon and sardines, favorably increases the size and composition of HDL particles, offering potential benefits in protection against cardiovascular disease.

For extra benefits, a variety of herbs and spices including basil, garlic, onion, rosemary, oregano, parsley, all contain a wealth of heart-healthy compounds that support circulation, inflammation response, and antioxidant activity. Add in brightly colored fruits, especially berries, and you have a diet that goes a long way toward providing a broad spectrum of nutrients optimize cardiovascular and overall health.

Citrus fruits, kiwis, strawberries, and cantaloupes are all high in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that helps control free radical damage to the walls of the arteries. Citrus fruits also contain flavonoids that can help strengthen your capillaries. Watermelon and cooked tomatoes are rich in lycopene, which discourages the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Colorful fruits and vegetables contain high levels of antioxidants and health-promoting compounds that work to neutralize damaging free radicals in the body, support healthy blood vessels, fight aging and promote overall vitality.

Nuts and seeds

Certain nuts and seeds, such as walnuts, chia seeds and almonds, can help promote cardiovascular health. Pumpkin seeds, in particular, are high in natural vitamin E, which may reduce the thickness of blood and therefore lower the risk of blood clot formation. Vitamin E is also a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant, helping to protect cell membranes from oxidative damage that can promote plaque formation. Walnuts, chia seeds and almonds contain omega-3 fatty acids that support heart health.

Researched supplements

You have your Mediterranean diet in place, you are exercising regularly and have some meditative practices in place for keeping your stress levels down and your life in good balance. What else can you do to support healthy aging and cardiovascular function?

A key is to look at published research. In my practice, I recommend several supplements that have extensive published research supporting their benefits for cardiovascular health.

One clinically researched formula is based on an ancient Tibetan herbal blend containing 19 unique botanical ingredients that are rich in active compounds such as tannins, flavonoids, polyphenols and essential oils. These ingredients work synergistically to support immunity, antioxidant activity, circulation and cardiovascular function. Used for centuries in traditional Oriental medical systems, many ingedients in this formula have been the subject of dozens of published clinical studies over the last 30 years. Results show it offers critical circulatory and heart health benefits, as well as support for other areas of health. The formula is sold under a prescription in many parts of Europe due to its clinical efficacy and broad-spectrum benefits.

Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) is another supplement with over 40 published studies on a specific form of it. MCP — with the correct molecular weight and structure — has a very unique mechanism of action. It is a natural binder of Galectin-3, a molecule that drives chronic inflammation and scar tissue formation in vital organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys, and also promotes cancer growth and metastasis. Galectin-3 is such an important orchestrator of cellular damage that researchers have been intensely studying its effects, with over 8,000 published articles. What’s clear from this research is the importance of keeping Galectin-3’s activity at low levels, and MCP is the only available agent shown to do this. MCP is demonstrated to be an important addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle for promoting heart and cardiovascular health.

Synergistic approaches

Since the cardiovascular network is literally our life support, we need a multi-pronged approach to maintain a healthy system. An anti-inflammatory diet, regular exercise balanced with sufficient rest and relaxation, and research-based supplements, all work together to form a comprehensive foundation for cardiovascular and long-term health.

The hottest months of the year offer great times for many, but for people with mold sensitivities who live in damp areas, these times can be especially difficult.

That’s because, when temperatures rise, molds that were more dormant during winter come to life and “bloom” into surrounding environments, spreading spores and wreaking health havoc — mostly among people who are predisposed to mold toxicity.

And as we’re finding out, that population may be relatively high. Water damaged buildings are an increasing problem, and other compounding factors including heavy metal exposure or bacterial infections can make symptoms much worse.

What’s more, mold sensitivities and allergies are more prevalent. With warmer winters on record and more rainfall in many areas, mold growth is exploding in a number of regions. And people’s health simultaneously suffers.

There are thousands of diverse species of this type of fungus, and mold spores can be found just about everywhere, even in dry desert areas. Black molds (Stachybotrys chartarum and Stachybotrys chlorohalonata) are the most dangerous to human health, and are commonly found in wet basements and other water-damaged areas of a building. Routes of exposure are commonly through the lungs and/or digestive tract.

Overlapping symptoms

Symptoms of mold toxicity can resemble other illnesses such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and more. Neurotoxicity is a significant issue, since mold, particularly black mold, is a powerful neurotoxin and can cause serious, long term health damage. The list of symptoms is long and many are general — here are some of the primary symptoms, which can eventually progress to serious debilities if exposure continues:

 • Fatigue
 • Chronic sinus infection
 • Headaches
 • Respiratory symptoms
 • Sensitivity to light
 • Muscle and joint pain
 • Confusion and memory loss/brain fog
 • Blurred vision
 • Skin rash
 • Numbness and tingling
 • Many others…

Genetic predisposition

Over the last decade, genetic testing advancements have been able to identify people who are genetically predisposed to mold sickness. It is now estimated that up to 24% of the population fall into this category. These tests, called HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) DR tests, identify patients who lack the specific genetic factors that allow their immune system to identify and remove mold and mold toxins, as well as other neurotoxins such as heavy metals, Lyme bacterium and its byproducts. HLA DR tests can tell if a person is susceptible to mold toxins, Lyme disease or multi-susceptible to a number of identified neurotoxins.

Interestingly, many of the symptoms of mold poisoning and Lyme disease, even gluten sensitivity, appear to overlap. In correlation with this similar symptomology, the genetic subtypes of people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity appear o overlap significantly with the genetic subtypes for mold sensitivity.

Dr. Shoemaker, MD, a leading mold toxicity expert and author of several authoritative books on the subject, suggests that it’s not necessarily a mold or related fungal infection that is aggravating symptoms, but rather, the bio-toxins these organisms produce. These biotoxins wreak havoc on the nervous system, joints, immunity and much more.

In addition to the HLA DR testing, Dr. Shoemaker advises a number of other tests to evaluate mold poisoning and the level of damage in the body that has occurred as a result of these toxins. Additional tests include specific immune, inflammatory, hormonal and other markers that can indicate various aspects of biotoxin poisoning and help guide treatment.

Addressing mold toxicity

Even if you don’t believe yourself to be mold-sensitive, these harmful invaders need to be avoided as much as possible. But if you do have mold poisoning, this is priority number one — even if it means you must move residences. This is the hardest aspect of mold treatment and the main reason that people can’t recover from chronic mold toxicity. No matter how much treatment you undergo, without eradicating the fungus from your living and work environments, symptoms will continue to progress. And because mold can hide undetected, it sometimes takes a mold remediation expert to test your home. But here’s a tip: if there is any water damage, it’s almost certain that mold is growing there.

Chronic mold toxicity requires a complex and multi-faceted protocol for healing. It’s important to work with a “mold-literate” health practitioner who knows how to test for mold sensitivity and treat with appropriate therapies. As a pioneer in this field, Dr. Shoemaker offers a number of important resources for patients and physicians to address mold poisoning and related neurological problems from co-infections, including Lyme disease.

In my clinic, one of the therapies we use to address mold biotoxins is a blend of modified citrus pectin from citrus peels and modified alginates from seaweed. This formula helps the body to safely remove heavy metals and neurotoxins, including mold biotoxins. These benefits make the MCP/alginate formula an important supplement for the significant portion of the population who may lack the appropriate genes to identify and remove these biotoxins. Another important therapy we use, as recommended by Dr. Shoemaker, is a medication called Colystramine, which binds to mold biotoxins and other biotoxins in the digestive tract, preventing them from being absorbed into the body.

Chronic mold toxicity is commonly misdiagnosed, as many conventional doctors are not familiar with or sensitive to what is considered by many to be a “fringe” body of research. However, in my practice, we’ve been able to identify and address numerous cases of mold susceptibility and toxicity, helping patients — over time — balance and restore their health with targeted, integrative protocols.

In the US alone, more than 60,000 different chemicals are used in industry, agriculture and household products, none of which require real safety testing. These include flame retardants, pesticides and hydrocarbons and many other everyday pollutants. This list does not even include the chemical compounds which are byproducts of industrial processes.

Despite their widespread use and assumed safety, independent research demonstrates that these chemicals pose real harm, particularly to vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, babies and children.

Common culprits

Numerous common chemicals are inked to some of our most serious health conditions, including cancer, diabetes, neurodevelopmental disorders, and more. Some of them are…

 • Phthalates, found in plastics
 • Organophosphate (OP) pesticides
 • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) flame retardants, found in furniture, electronics, household dust
 • Combustion-related air pollutants
 • Lead
 • Mercury
 • Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
 • many others…

If we want to support health against this constant barrage of harmful chemicals and pollutants, we need strategies to safely remove toxins and heavy metals from our bodies, and prevent their re-accumulation.

New study shows specific diet sheds toxins

For years, integrative health practitioners have touted the benefits of a caloric-restriction diet to support health and promote long-term wellness. This type of diet emphasizes reduced caloric intake, a focus on nutrient-dense foods and intermittent fasting, and is shown to enhance a number of markers in the body related to health and longevity.

However, some critics worried that a drastic reduction in calories would promote rapid fat loss, leading to increased toxins being released into the circulation as toxin-storing fat cells dissolve.

But a 2017 study out of Skidmore College showed that a calorie-restricting, “protein-pacing diet” was capable of helping the body not only shed pounds, but also remove toxic compounds in the form of PCBs.

In addition, this type of diet decreased oxidative stress and enhanced heart health.

The diet focused on 4-6 meals a day that included 20-25g of protein with each meal, as well as intermittent fasting. These results are encouraging, demonstrating that the benefits of caloric restriction extend to effective detoxification of harmful compounds.

Improving our natural detox functions

In addition to specific detox diets, there are a number of botanicals that support detoxification, including modified citrus pectin (MCP) and sodium alginates. These are gentle agents that support the body’s ability to remove toxic metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic, as well as environmental toxins such as certain pesticides. This combination has been clinically shown to safely remove toxic metals without affecting essential minerals as so many other detox agents do.

In my practice, detoxification is a starting point in the treatment of numerous chronic illnesses, including cancer, Lyme disease, heart disease, autoimmune disease and many others. Gently removing toxins from the circulation and digestion first is a key strategy. It allows us to then move to a deeper detox of organs and tissues, without overloading the system, an approach that is also important for healthy people undergoing a serious detox. For the first phase, I use the MCP and alginate formula which works synergistically to bind to and chelate toxins and heavy metals from the digestive tract and the circulatory system, and prevent their reabsorption. Unlike harsh chelation agents, these botanicals reduce toxic load without side effects.

For deeper detoxification, I use a phase 2 detox formula that contains botanicals such as milk thistle seed extract, dandelion leaf, cilantro and others to support the organs of elimination including liver, kidneys and skin. This targeted formula also helps to enhance the body’s natural detox mechanisms, including methylation, and promotes powerful antioxidant activity to help neutralize free radicals generated by toxic body burden.

Don’t forget the basics

Of course, an organic diet emphasizing whole, unprocessed foods, lots of green vegetables, and plenty of filtered water and herbal teas also provides critical detox support and supplies important phytonutrients to protect the body’s vital systems. Regular exercise is another key detox modality that most of us overlook with our busy schedules. A 20 minute walk everyday can do wonders for your health.

Today, environmental toxicity has become widespread problem that requires an urgent solution. As research continues, we can expect an increase in innovative methods that support the body’s abilities to eliminate toxins, safely and naturally.

The popularity of turmeric among researchers is gaining ground almost daily.

For millennia, this bright yellow spice has been revered for its many uses in cuisine, herbalism, and other areas. Today, researchers and medical professionals are rapidly exploring turmeric’s remarkable potential and demonstrating its powerful benefits for many key areas of health.

One important new study out of UCLA showed that people who took 90 mg of a highly absorbable form of curcumin — the active compound in turmeric that lends its bright yellow pigment — experienced significant improvements in memory and attention over an 18 month period. Subjects also reported improved mood. Furthermore, PET brain scans of participants showed significantly less amyloid and tau signals in the amygdala and hypothalamus, indicating reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Turmeric’s powerful secret

Researchers believe that these important benefits may be attributed to turmeric’s powerful anti-inflammatory actions, but more research is needed to better understand the exact mechanisms.

Previous studies have also demonstrated turmeric’s benefits for cognitive health, in addition to its ability to fight cancer, boost immune function, protect organ function and more. Here are just a few key highlights among turmeric’s long list of beneficial actions:

 1. Boosts immune function — Research demonstrates that curcumin in turmeric supports the activity of a protein known as CAMP, which helps maintain healthy immune function.
 2. Protects the liver — Studies have shown that turmeric helps to maintain liver health, particularly during exposure to toxins. For example, turmeric promotes the production of bile to support digestive health and detoxification.
 3. Fights dementia — Many epidemiologists have long thought that turmeric’s use in India has helped its aging populations maintain cognitive health. New studies, including this brand new one out of UCLA, are bearing that out, showing that turmeric actively promotes cognitive and neurological health.
 4. Combats cancer — Numerous studies demonstrate that turmeric delivers powerful benefits for fighting cancer growth and metastasis throughout the body, both for active support as well as long-term maintenance and prevention.
 5. Supplies powerful antioxidants — Turmeric’s high antioxidant count offers powerful anti-aging support against free radicals and oxidative stress.
 6. Relives indigestion — According to the National Institutes of Health, taking turmeric may help relieve occasional upset stomach.
 7. Eliminates toxins — Because it supports liver health, digestion, immunity and more, turmeric can aid in the process of eliminating health-robbing toxins and help prevent their accumulation.
 8. Protects food during grilling — Research shows that adding turmeric before grilling can reduce the formation of toxic compounds produced by charred meat — by up to 40 % — making it a great companion spice for your next barbecue.
 9. Advanced Formula for Prostate Health — Because of turmeric’s many benefits, it has become an important staple in advanced nutraceutical formulations. For example, in my practice I recommend a prostate health formula which contains a highly bioavailable form of turmeric extract called BCM-95®. BCM-95 is an enhanced form of curcumin shown to deliver up to 7 times more pharmacologically bioactive curcumin, compared to regular turmeric and curcumin products.

This researched formula has been shown in published studies to actively fight prostate cancer and promote optimal prostate and urinary function, thanks in part to the potent effects of curcumin — one of turmeric’s most powerful active compounds.

With so many critical benefits being discovered, it’s no wonder that this bright yellow spice makes an excellent addition to daily health programs for long-term wellness.

We all experience those moments from time to time — a forgotten name, a hazy memory, misplaced keys…

But according to a recent study, if you’re middle aged and have undergone surgery in the last few years, you may experience greater cognitive decline.

Published February 2018 in the journal, Anaesthesia, the study showed that 18% of subjects who’d had surgery in the last four years experienced a decline in immediate memory.

The number of operations was also associated with a reduction in immediate memory, and longer cumulative operations were associated with a decline in working memory.

Though preliminary, these findings call to question the long-term neurological effects of anesthesia used during surgery and its overall impact on health and wellness. Luckily there are a number of ways to support cognitive health and reduce the chances of memory decline, whether related to surgery, health condition, age, stress, or other factors that can impact brain and neurological health…

Support Stong Cognition with One of the Most Tested Nutrients for Brain Health and Memory!

1. Improve Diet and Digestion

A nutrient dense diet and healthy digestion are at the core of long term vitality. Nutrition affects every system in the body, but especially the brain. Traditional Chinese Medicine, for example, has long associated cognitive power with strong digestion. More recently, researchers have found an abundance of neuropeptides (molecules that transmit brain signals), in the gastrointestinal tract, and have also shown that the beneficial bacteria in our GI tracts influence brain health, mood and much more. Overall, healthy digestion is a complex process of assimilation and organization, much like the way the brain “digests” information.

One issue linking diet and memory loss is chronic inflammation. Of all the factors that influence inflammation, diet has the most direct impact. A number of nutrient-dense foods with specific anti-inflammatory qualities, such as green vegetables, sprouted grains and legumes, healthy fats and others, are shown to support brain health and cognitive function.

On the other hand, junk foods high in sugars and trans-fats fuel inflammation and impair cognitive function. Worse, insulin dysfunction – usually related to chronically elevated blood sugar from an unhealthy diet– is a major risk factor in dementia and cognitive decline.

In addition to a nutrient dense, anti-inflammatory diet, certain herbs and nutrients such as cardamom, pomegranate, cinnamon, galangal, chromium and zinc support digestion and nutrient absorption, and help reduce inflammation.

2. Detoxify

Heavy metals and toxins such as mercury, lead, pesticides and pollutants can accumulate in the body, contributing to inflammation and deadening cognitive function over time. A gentle detox program with natural cleansing supplements and an anti-inflammatory diet can help improve brain function.

Modified citrus pectin (MCP) has been clinically proven to safely remove heavy metals and other toxins from the body without affecting essential mineral levels. MCP binds to toxins, allowing them to be gently removed by the body’s detox systems. The compound also binds to an inflammatory protein, called galectin-3, which has been linked to cancer, heart disease and other conditions.

3. Prevent Oxidative Stress

A major factor in brain fog is oxidative stress, caused by unstable molecules called “free radicals.” Free radicals fuel inflammation and damage brain cells and DNA, so be sure to pack in antioxidants which scavenge harmful free radicals, reduce inflammation and help detoxify the body. Berries, dark greens and other richly colored fruits and vegetables are good choices, as they contain powerful antioxidant compounds that defend against oxidative stress.

Honokiol extract from magnolia bark, is a powerful botanical antioxidant and powerful neuro-protector with a wide range of additional benefits.

4. Support Cell Power

Cellular power plants called mitochondria use oxygen to create energy, and there are more mitochondria in brain cells than other cells. So it’s important to support mitochondrial function to improve oxygen utilization in the brain.

There are a number of supplements that enhance cellular energy production and support brain health, such as NADH (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) which is found in all living cells. In addition, supplements like Co-Q-10, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, L-Carnosine and medicinal mushrooms all support mitochondrial function and reduce inflammation, while helping to combat free radicals. As such, they can offer important support for cognitive capacity, vital energy and overall health.

5. Control Stress

I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that chronic stress can impair mental function. Think of how difficult it was to study the night before a test. Sometimes the facts just don’t stick.

Ongoing stress is inflammatory, elevating levels of hormones like cortisol that can lead to chronic inflammation in both brain and body. In addition, chronic stress can cause glucose imbalances, destroy brain cells, increase fatigue and fuel depression.

There are a number of practices that have been shown to reduce stress and benefit the brain: especially yoga, Tai Chi, meditation. The breathing that is so essential to these disciplines increases oxygen throughout the body, which in turn increases energy. These exercises are also shown to reduce inflammation and help calm an overactive nervous system.

It’s also important to take time to enjoy life. Meet up with friends, go to a show, get a massage. Enjoyment relaxes us and can have a powerful impact on both our mental and physical health.

6. Exercise

One of the underlying issues we see in memory loss is the inability to get oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Many times, this comes down to a circulation issue, which can be related to a sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and other factors. Regular exercise also increases neural connections throughout your body, balances hormones and supports numerous other areas of health.

Studies now show that one of the most important things you can do for your brain is to get up and move around. Go for regular walks, take bike rides, get out in nature. If you find yourself stuck in a fog, get out and exercise, and notice the clarity you feel afterwards.

If cognitive decline persists, see your doctor. In serious cases, it can signal an underlying neurological or inflammatory condition, such as Lyme disease or diabetes. With the right support, you can stay sharp and protect brain health — at any age.

Editor’s note: While you’re doing all the right things to protect your brain as you age, make sure you don’t make the mistake 38 million Americans do every day — by taking a drug that robs them of an essential brain nutrient! Click here to discover the truth about the Cholesterol Super-Brain!

This is a landmark moment for those seeking natural solutions that promote prostate health.

In February of this year, clinical research findings were presented at the prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Genitourinary Cancer Conference, reporting on the use of the natural supplement, modified citrus pectin, in men who have prostate cancer that is progressing. The clinical study is still ongoing, but at the halfway point of the study, the interim results are highly significant…

Men in the study had been treated for prostate cancer with either surgery or radiation. Their blood levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA) were then followed as a marker, and should remain at undetectable levels. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland in very small amounts. In healthy men, a rising PSA beyond normal limits indicates a need to investigate the prostate further. Elevated PSA, in addition to indicating possible prostate cancer, can also result from chronic inflammation and infection, complicating the interpretation of PSA results, which has sparked an ongoing controversy about whether men should be routinely screening with the PSA test.

For the men in this study who were already treated for prostate cancer, an increase in the PSA is troubling news, an indication that prostate cancer is present despite treatment, called “biochemical relapse” The rate at which the blood PSA levels rise, called the “PSA doubling time,” is an indication of how aggressive the cancer growth is; the faster the PSA doubling time, the more aggressive the condition. Unfortunately, these men, whose PSA levels were rising, have limited options for treatment at this stage, which makes the study findings truly groundbreaking.

Clinical study shows significant interim results

An impressive 79 percent of the 34 study participants completing 6 months of treatment with modified citrus pectin had a significant slowing of the PSA doubling time; in 62 percent there was no progression of the cancer and in 17 percent there was an improvement. These groundbreaking results are in agreement with findings of two previous smaller studies, and provide hope for the thousands of men who face a similar situation.

The health of the prostate gland is a focus for most men as they age and for good reason. Changes in prostate size that commonly occur with age can drastically affect quality of life with symptoms such as reduced urine stream, difficulty starting to urinate, nighttime frequency, urgency, etc. In addition, prostate cancer is common, and with all the recent controversy about PSA testing and how best to monitor prostate health, men often don’t know where to turn to seek solutions to promoting healthy prostate function.

What is modified citrus pectin? (MCP)

MCP is a modified carbohydrate fiber derived from the white inner peel (pith) of citrus fruit. Unmodified citrus pectin is a large fiber molecule, too big to be absorbed from the digestive tract, and promotes healthy digestion and microbial balance. The form of citrus pectin used in the study is modified by a proprietary process to reduce the molecular size enabling absorption into the systemic circulation where it actively benefits the entire body.

What does this mean for healthy men?

Research has shown that MCP, because of its unique structure, is able to bind to a protein called galectin-3. You will be hearing more about galectin-3 because literally thousands of studies are now confirming that this protein becomes a danger to our health when levels rise.

When present at normal levels in the circulation, galectin-3 plays a vital role in cellular growth, repair processes, immunity and other critical functions. However, like many other biologically active molecules, balance is key, as elevated circulating galectin-3 can actively fuel a number of conditions including inflammation, fibrosis, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

Galectin-3 is like a conductor in an orchestra; it directs the complex interactions of other molecules in a domino effect that promotes chronic inflammation and scarring (fibrosis), dysregulates immune and metabolic function and function and fuels abnormal cellular growth. Levels of Galectin-3 have been found to rise with increasing age and higher Gal-3 levels are associated with higher mortality from all causes. The bottom line is, Galectin-3 levels need to be kept in a normal low range to promote ongoing health in all vital systems, including the prostate gland. MCP offers a safe, natural solution to compliment a healthy diet and lifestyle.

This groundbreaking study used the most researched form of modified citrus pectin which has been the subject of 30 published studies. MCP has become an increasingly popular essential daily nutritional supplement both for those with chronic conditions and for people who are interested in strategies for healthy aging. After 20 years of research, the citrus peel is finally having its day in the sun.

We all know the “YoYo” approach to losing weight…

You spend a few weeks cutting out this or substituting that, counting every calorie. And quite often, the weight comes off and you revert back to “normal.”

But after a time, the weight comes back and once again you’re trying a different program. Thus, the definition of the “yo-yo diet.” Because these dramatic approaches generally don’t help in the long run, people often assume that nothing will work.

We often think of a diet as a special, temporary effort to help us lose extra pounds. Part of the problem is our choice of definitions, so let’s reshuffle that a bit…

A diet is how we eat, period. Rather than a temporary regime, a diet should be a long-term effort to improve our food habits. You might find that a shift in attitude from weight loss at all costs, to a focus on longer term goals of improving your metabolism, getting a handle on keeping your blood sugar well regulated, and reducing inflammation and toxin load, will give you a better outcome all round.

Some key goals

 1. Provide proper nourishment including healthy choices and amounts of protein, fats and complex carbs, as well as essential minerals and vitamins by making wise choices in the vegetable, fruit and grain department.
 2. Support healthy metabolism and blood sugar control by choosing foods that don’t spike blood sugar and keep us cruising in-between meals with a good energy level, mental clarity and free of cravings.
 3. Keep inflammation at bay with good dietary choices, moderate exercise and stress reduction practices.

Incorporate compounds that help your body rid itself of toxins and heavy metals.

But what about those cravings?

One of the barriers to eating a healthy diet is the craving for unhealthy foods. Unfortunately, what we eat perpetuates these cravings…

Processed snack foods often have a high glycemic index, which means the body converts the food to glucose very quickly. Blood sugar spikes and then abruptly crashes, leading to more cravings and problems with metabolism.

Fortunately, with a little effort, we can retrain the body to hunger for healthier items by eating foods that balance and sustain our blood sugar throughout the day. Processed foods are often high in both fat and salt, both items which our bodies need in moderation, but are concentrated in snack foods which often use unhealthy types of fats and excess salt.

Enter “Glycemic Index” and “Glycemic Load”

The glycemic index is a rating of how quickly particular food releases glucose into your bloodstream. Foods low on the glycemic index (GI) scale tend to release glucose slowly and steadily. Foods high on the glycemic index release glucose rapidly.

But the glycemic index of foods tells only part of the story. The glycemic load takes into account the actual serving size — how many grams of carbohydrate are in each serving. So for example let’s take watermelon, which has a high glycemic index of 80 on a scale of 1-100. But a 6 gram serving of watermelon has very little carbohydrate (6 grams) so its glycemic load is only 5. Harvard University has an excellent chart of 100 foods to help guide your choices.

Let’s talk about inflammation and weight

Inflammation is now proven to be a pervasive common denominator of most chronic conditions, including accelerated aging, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease and neurodegenerative conditions.

Fat cells themselves are inflammatory and produce multiple chemical signaling molecules and hormones that further fuel inflammation. Recent research has shown that the rogue protein, Galectin-3 (Gal-3), is a major promotor of inflammation in the body and orchestrates many damaging effects of chronic inflammation.

A recent study found some very fascinating results. In this study of rats fed a high fat diet, the fat tissue of these obese animals showed an increase in Gal-3 levels with higher adipose tissue inflammation, contributing to metabolic alterations associated with obesity. Rats treated with modified citrus pectin, a natural inhibitor of the Gal-3 protein, in their drinking water were spared from these negative effects. Elevated Galectin-3 is also associated with insulin resistance, which eventually leads to the development of Type II Diabetes.

Clearly there is more to understanding weight and obesity than our usual efforts to count calories and modified citrus pectin can provide a new approach to addressing these complex issues.

Pectasol-C® is the only well-researched form of modified citrus pectin available, derived from the inner peel of citrus fruits, and has been formulated to exact specifications to be highly absorbed into the circulation for systemic benefits. Other forms of citrus pectin have larger molecules that are unable to cross the intestinal barrier. This special form of citrus pectin has also been shown to remove toxins and heavy metals from the circulation, helping keep the body clear of these toxins which are so pervasive in our environment and food supply.

PectaClear®, a formulation I recommend to my patients, combines modified citrus pectin and alginates from seaweed is a gentle yet powerful toxin binder which catches toxins in the intestine before they have a chance to get absorbed (alginate action), and binds to toxins that have already gained entry (MCP action). Since toxins and heavy metals are often stored in fat cells, any program aimed to shed some pounds needs to take into account the release of toxins that will accompany weight loss.

This is a novel and welcome addition to the traditional approach to weight loss, taking into account the newest research on fat physiology, and when combined with a low-glycemic diet, nutrient rich food choices, exercise and stress reduction, can give us new tools — an exciting time for all of us who struggle with weight and metabolism issues.

Women have unique mineral needs that change throughout the life cycle.

And minerals perform a myriad of functions and are involved with every system, from structural elements of bone to glucose balance, nerve transmission and immune function.

Some minerals are needed in larger quantities, such as calcium and magnesium, which form structural components of bone…

Others, such as zinc, selenium, iodine and chromium are needed in smaller amounts but are essential cofactors performing a wide range of functions.

Mineral needs for women change with each stage of life; menstruating women have different needs than postmenopausal women. Mineral deficiencies are common and often unrecognized, especially with modern nutrient-poor diets, mineral depleted soils and the tendency to restrict foods with dieting. Deficiencies can contribute to many common health problems including hormone imbalances, osteoporosis, anemia and thyroid problems.

Our first consideration is making our diet as nutrient-rich as possible. In addition, taking a high-quality multivitamin/mineral supplement can help you reach the recommended amount of minerals you need to stay healthy, but should be chosen based on your stage of life and menstrual status.

What research is saying…

New research is redefining some of the commonly held doctrines on mineral supplementation. Front and center stage is calcium, which has long been at the forefront of controversy – how much supplementation is beneficial? Can supplementation cause harm?

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and is required for healthy muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling, and hormonal secretion. Almost all the calcium in the body is stored in the bones and teeth, where it is vital for their support and structure. Bone is formed during the first 35 years of life, our bone bank accounts for the inevitable loss that occurs during and after menopause. So it’s critical for teens and young women to have an adequate intake of calcium and magnesium to build that reserve.

In addition to its benefits for the bones, calcium is also effective in lowering blood pressure, treating migraines and reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Seems like more is better but the latest research shows otherwise.

A newly released review of 33 clinical trials study involving over 50,000 older adults concluded that the use of supplements that included calcium, vitamin D, or both compared with placebo or no treatment was not associated with a lower risk of fractures.

Another very important finding is that too much calcium can increase risk of kidney stones, and cardiovascular disease. A 2010 analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials with over 5,000 participants linked calcium supplementation with an increased risk of heart attack. These findings apply specifically to calcium supplements, not to the usual dietary intake.

Clearly, these are important and controversial topics with research ongoing. The takeaway message thus far is to focus on good dietary sources of calcium and keep supplementation to around 400 mg/day rather than the usually recommended 1000 -1200 mg/day.

While some of the richest sources of calcium include dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese, these should not be your only sources, since dairy products are often hard to digest or are a source of food sensitivity or lactose intolerance. They also contain low levels of magnesium and high levels of phosphorus, whereas vegetable sources are higher in magnesium and other minerals to form a more balanced food source for minerals. Be sure to include an abundance of non-dairy sources such as sea vegetables, Chinese cabbage, kale and broccoli.

Magnesium

The critical importance of adequate magnesium is often overlooked with calcium getting all the attention. But magnesium is equally essential and is involved in more than 300 enzyme and metabolic reactions. Low levels in the body can cause irritability, headaches, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, muscle spasms or twitches, constipation, and insomnia. In addition to maintaining normal muscle and nerve function, magnesium helps to keep your heart rhythm steady and supports a healthy immune system.

Magnesium is as important as calcium in developing and maintaining bone health, so an ideal bone support supplement will contain equal amounts of both calcium and magnesium. Magnesium is also involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis since the body requires it for completing certain chemical reactions pertaining to the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats.

Finally, magnesium is required for the synthesis of the antioxidant glutathione (your body’s master antioxidant), which is crucial for detoxification activities and a healthy immune system. Although supplements are available, nature provides a number of dietary sources of magnesium, including leafy green vegetables, seaweed or green algae, avocados, nuts, beans, raw chocolate, and grains such as brown rice and millet.

Some forms of calcium and magnesium have much better absorption than others, so in choosing a supplement, sources such as citrate, malate, chelate, and orotate are more easily absorbed.

Iron

Iron is part of the protein hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the body, but is also found in the protein myoglobin, which makes oxygen available for muscle contractions. An iron deficiency causes a hindrance in the delivery of oxygen to the cells, which can result in fatigue, decreased immunity and anemia – a condition where red blood cells are immature, small or contain too little hemoglobin to carry the normal amount of oxygen to the tissues.

There are two forms of dietary iron, including heme and non-heme iron. Heme iron is derived from the protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells and is contained in animal foods such as red meats, fish and poultry. Non-heme iron is found in plant foods such as lentils, beans, blackstrap molasses, dried apricots, and raisins. Iron is a double-edged sword, however, as you need enough but not too much. Menstruating women are losing blood on a monthly basis, for example, and may require supplementation, whereas most postmenopausal women do not need supplemental iron.

Zinc

Zinc is another mineral that is vital to healthy living, as even a small deficiency can cause decreased immunity. This mineral is most widely known for preventing and shortening the duration of colds, which is due to its powerful ability to strengthen the immune system and increase white blood cell count.

Zinc is necessary for the function of many enzymes in the body, effectively assists in regulating hormones and has even been shown to increase fertility. This is a critical mineral in any supplement program, as it aids the body’s absorption of minerals such as calcium.

Finally, the anti-inflammatory and tissue healing benefits of zinc can help improve numerous conditions such as acne and poor skin health, among others. Dietary sources of zinc include oysters, most types of meat, beans, nuts, whole grains, as well as pumpkin seeds.

Iodine

Iodine was one of the first minerals recognized as essential to human health and is an essential constituent of thyroid hormones. Its deficiency causes different disorders that include goiter, hypothyroidism, reduced fertility and alteration in growth, physical and neurological development. It is especially important for women who are pregnant to monitor both their iodine levels as well as levels in their babies in order to prevent certain developmental problems. Deficiencies of iodine and selenium are thought to contribute to thyroid problems. Foods that provide the body with healthy levels of iodine, including most types of seafood, clams, lobster, oysters, and sardines, as well as seaweeds. This is another mineral where too much of a good thing can be as harmful as too little. Consult your health care practitioner before taking iodine supplements.

Selenium

Selenium is another crucial mineral for optimum health, important for glucose uptake and regulation of metabolic processes including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis, and is essential for immune function. Selenium, in addition to iodine, is essential for thyroid hormone synthesis and function. Selenium also plays a role in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Selenium deficiency can result in a number of functional disorders, including skeletal muscle dysfunction, cardiac dysfunction and pancreatic degeneration. Selenium acts as an antioxidant against free radicals that damage DNA and is often included with Vitamins C and E to help fight against cancer, heart disease and to promote healthy aging. Natural food sources high in selenium include cereals, Brazil nuts, legumes, beef, chicken, eggs, and cheese.

Making sure you are getting sufficient amounts of essential minerals and vitamins, healthy sources of fat and protein and complex carbohydrates is a good way to set a solid foundation for health at all stages of life. Add in a wisely chosen supplement regimen to support this strong foundation to promote increased antioxidant activity, improved digestion, healthy inflammation response, healthy glucose metabolism, healthier lipid profiles and increased immune activity = more vitality and well-being.

With the New Year well underway, many people are already starting to put their resolutions into practice. It has become part of the ritual associated with the holidays, but is not only about “overindulgence remorse”. It is actually an ancient practice that goes along with the return of the sun after Winter Solstice. As the days slowly start to get longer we want to be more energetic and active and vital. In addition to the usual self-resolve to lose some extra pounds or have a more consistent exercise routine, many people include detox among their New Year’s resolutions — a cleanse can be a great way to reset metabolism, bolster immunity, and refresh vital energy.

As an integrative physician, I have guided my patients through various kinds of detox programs for over 30 years, and what I’ve found is that gentle is better. You don’t need to feel “bad to feel good”. The truth is, detox can be a gentle, gradual and — yes — enjoyable process, when we focus on nourishing foods and targeted supplements. These minor adjustments can make a big difference in our health, vitality and overall well-being.

The food solution

The right foods can detoxify and heal our bodies, increase vitality and add years to our lives while other foods get us hooked into an addictive cycle. How do we make the right choices? There are some general guidelines that work well for most people. For anyone with digestive issues or other chronic health problems, taking an individualized approach is needed.

Inflammation is Key: Low level chronic inflammation is a primary root of chronic illness and accelerated aging. So how does this relate to diet? A study in the Journal of Nutrition gathered data on a whole battery of pro- and anti-inflammatory markers measured in participants’ blood who consumed particular foods. They then created a wonderful tool, an Inflammatory Index for 2400 foods. This makes it easy for you to check any particular food, or to analyze your current diet and make adjustments to make your diet more anti-inflammatory.

It’s no surprise that an anti-inflammatory diet has a foundation of nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods, like sprouted grains, nuts and legumes, highly colored vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, and lean proteins. And no surprise that processed white flour products, alcohol, sugars, trans fats and excess vegetable oils high in Omega-6 are all pro-inflammatory.

And what about healthy foods like eggs, tofu, and organic dairy products? This is where the individualized approach comes is important. Identifying food sensitivities is an important first step in any comprehensive detox program. Even someone who eats a healthy diet may be increasing inflammation unknowingly, by eating foods that their bodies recognize as “toxic.” A specialist in food allergies can test for common sensitivities to foods like dairy, gluten, eggs, soy, and others. Another way to test is to follow an elimination diet for two weeks, cutting out common sensitivity-producing foods, and then add each one back in every few days, monitoring your symptoms.

Good foods and herbs for detox support

Greens, including cruciferous vegies are often the foundation of a cleanse. The cruciferous family – cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and broccoli sprouts, kale, and Brussels sprouts support hormone metabolism, as well as detoxification. One study found that people who consumed broccoli sprouts were more successful at removing the toxic compound benzene from their bodies. Hydration is all important – some good choices include vegetable broth, herbal teas, fresh vegetable juice, and of course lots of water. Include herbs such as milk thistle, dandelion, burdock root, astragalus, cilantro, and ginkgo – all support detoxification by targeting different organs and systems.

Fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchee have become an essential part of healthy eating and for good reason – they are rich in probiotic bacteria, enzymes and nutrients that support detox and maintenance of a healthy microbiome.

One of my favorite recommendations during a cleanse is a lemon-olive oil drink regimen excellent for both liver and gall bladder. The mixture is made by blending an organic lemon, cut into pieces, 1¼ cups spring water and a tablespoon of olive oil. Partially strain the mixture, leaving some pulp. Drink before bed.

So, plan ahead, pick a time frame that suits your schedule – it could be a day, a weekend a week, or more depending on your goals. Or it could be a more gradual process of changing incorporating healthier practices.

Extra help from targeted supplements

Heavy metals are everywhere in our environment, food and water. Even organic food can contain heavy metals as was discovered recently with arsenic in rice, especially brown rice. I have developed a supplement that addresses the two major issues with these and other toxins – getting rid of what we already have in our bodies, and preventing incoming toxins from getting absorbed. PectaClear® — is a blend of PectaSol-C® Modified Citrus Pectin and alginates from seaweed. The modified pectin portion is easily absorbed into the systemic circulation where it binds tightly to heavy metals, without depleting essential minerals. The alginates remain in the digestive system to bind to toxins before they are allowed entry. This makes it an excellent gentle formula to use on a daily basis.

I’ve also developed a comprehensive formula for more in-depth detoxification, ecoDetox®, a blend of botanical extracts and nutrients that optimize the body’s natural detox functions. The ingredients in this formula support not only the liver, but also the kidneys, skin and other organs of elimination, while providing antioxidant and vital energy support that is necessary for successful detoxification.

The combination of PectaClear and ecoDetox provides toxin binding capabilities with extensive support for our complex inherent detoxification systems. Along with a nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory diet and regular exercise, you’re well on your way to fulfilling your New Year’s resolutions.

2018 is here, and you’re probably thinking about resolutions that can help make it the best year yet!

Maybe you want to make more money in the coming year, or meet someone special…

Or, maybe, you want to take control of your health and become a healthier and happier person.

Whatever your goals are for the New Year, there is one top tip to accomplish them…

Peak Golden Oil

The golden-colored oil of the Nigella sativa plant contains compounds essential for a healthy immune system. That explains why it was documented in the oldest medical writings. But we don’t just rely on history to prove the therapeutic benefit of… MORE⟩⟩

The power of positive affirmations

Affirmations are statements that affect your conscious and subconscious mind.

Affirmations are a powerful way to move towards evolution of self and can be used as a crucial tool during the New Year, when goals and changes are made.

But this poses an important question: Do positive affirmations and positive thoughts really work? Can you help cure health issues simply by affirming yourself to be healthy and whole?

Well, certainly, having a positive outlook can alter your perception of reality which can be beneficial — but does it actually alter reality?

Not always, and here’s why…

When we make an affirmation, we generate a positive thought, but unfortunately it often doesn’t result in a real difference. More often than not, the thought is generated in a contrived way, and is not genuine. For instance, you might tell yourself that “you are healthy and happy”, but deep down, you might not really believe it.

Often, our positive thoughts are just a few thin layers covering a multitude of suppressed negative beliefs generated by fear, aversion, attachments and the like.

These negative beliefs can be both conscious and unconscious, but regardless of their specific location in our psyche, they are clearly the obstructing force in any real effect of positive affirmation on our reality.

Which leads to the conclusion that, Yes, positive affirmations do work, but only to the degree that they are truly genuine — that you generate them and sustain your belief in them from the deepest core of your being possible. This means being in touch with yourself, experiencing the true potential of your existence, and then being genuine to that experience.

Clearing the path for your affirmations

Through regular meditation and quieting of the mind, you can start to peel away layers of doubts and distractions and open your heart to a sense of well-being.

Essentially, this is the gateway to effective guided mental imagery, positive affirmations and other mind-body practices, allowing us to generate authentic positive thoughts and feelings that can result in concrete positive changes, including greater healing capacity and attainment of goals.

So in order to experience your positive affirmations in an effective and meaningful way, try this exercise:

 1. Allow yourself to relax. Certain positions like lying down or sitting with the back straight are useful, together with breathing slowly and turning attention inward to the breath.
 2. Create an opening in awareness. Shift to a greater field of perception and recognize that everything around us and inside us is constantly changing; nothing is permanent.
 3. Focus on whatever mental imagery you choose, in a clear, vivid, but transparent way. (You still hold awareness of your surroundings.) Allow the image to strengthen and imagine the positive outcome.

With the right training and practice, you can repeat these visualizations while you do your daily activities. This can be more easily achieved by initially practicing with opened eyes.

So, start the New Year with a new, clear and confident mind through positive affirmations. They can help you in all aspects of your life, and give you the strength to stay positive throughout the year!

Why the holidays make you sick: 4 tips to beat it https://easyhealthoptions.com/holidays-make-sick-4-tips-beat/ Tue, 19 Dec 2017 06:01:28 +0000 https://easyhealthoptions.com/?p=102097 If you’re like most people you probably believe that illnesses mostly happen during stressful events. But, in fact, we are most vulnerable to illnesses right after a period of heightened stress followed by a rapid drop in stress levels... exactly like what happens during and after the holidays.

The post Why the holidays make you sick: 4 tips to beat it appeared first on Easy Health Options®.

]]>
We all know how hectic the holiday season can be…

You spend weeks overindulging your sweet-tooth, skimping on sleep and all your health and fitness habits go out the window.

However, your energy levels have been at an all-time high and you’ve probably felt better than ever. Do you ever stop to wonder why?

It might be a good time to do that…

Because, very often, your body starts to feel quite the opposite as the holidays begin nearing their end. You find it difficult to get back into the swing of things, including your usual routines — family, work and yes, stress — and to your surprise the migraines are back with a vengeance and you feel more tired than usual.

This phenomenon is called ‘The Let Down Effect” — and, unfortunately, it’s not unusual to be hit hard with it this time of year

What exactly is “The Let Down Effect”?

If you’re like most people you probably believe that illnesses mostly happen during stressful events. But, in fact, we are most vulnerable to illnesses right after a period of heightened stress levels which are followed by a rapid drop in stress levels.

Imagine a car speeding at 90 mph and then abruptly coming to a quick stop. Now visualize how your immune system becomes compromised, leaving you exposed to possible illnesses. That’s a perfect analogy for The Let Down Effect, a term coined for the observation that people tend to experience an increase in illnesses or symptoms following stressful events, even after positive events such as after the holidays.

Why illness is triggered after the stressful period has ended?

When you become stressed, the brain, as well as key hormone-producing glands, undergoes chemical changes that affect the whole body. During periods of high stress levels, the body releases key hormones — including glucocorticoids (like cortisol); epinephrine and norepinephrine. This triggers the release of other “fight-or-flight” hormones, such as adrenalin, from the adrenal glands.

Behavioral neuroscientist Leah Pyter, an assistant professor of psychiatry at The Ohio State University Medical Center, describes how glucocorticoids can reactivate latent viral infections, for which symptoms are only obvious after a few days. It’s why symptoms seem to only appear after the stress has lifted, for example, during the weekend or on a trip.

Interestingly, while you’re under stress, the rise in cortisol and other stress hormones can shield you from feeling pain, which is why during stressful times, we often don’t feel pain and experience a surge of energy.

Stop making yourself sick

So, what can you do to shift yourself into a healthier pattern and reduce the high and lows from the Let-Down Effect? Here are a few tips you can use to keep your stress levels down and your immune system strong.

1. Focus on your diet

This one is important. If you’re running on empty, or eating unhealthy foods, your cortisol levels rise, increasing your glucose levels and causing your immune system to crash. By eating frequent, well-balanced meals filled with cruciferous vegetables, lean meats or other protein sources, whole grains, and fresh fruit, you’re lowering your stress hormones and supporting your immune system.

2. Exercise for increased immunity

Various studies have shown that even mild exercise can lead to a better immune system. Take a brisk walk or easy jog outside for 15 minutes. Another stress-reducing exercise is practicing yoga, or mediation. So take some time to center yourself and practice healthy stress-relief measures. Interestingly, studies on mindful meditation show that meditation not only reduces stress and anxiety better than antidepressants, but also strengthens a part of the brain associated with self-control.

3. Focus on better sleep

In our society, we often sacrifice sleep for the sake of efficiency. But science is showing how detrimental that is. Sleep disruption can contribute to some of our most serious degenerative diseases. Not only that, insomnia may indicate an underlying health issue.

Most often, however, sleep disorders result from our overly-busy, pro-inflammatory lifestyles. By taking healthy measures to reset our natural circadian rhythms, you can restore balance, promote better sleep patterns, and improve long-term health.

4. Supplements and herbs for winter

There are many botanicals that can help your immune system during the winter time. My first priority is boosting immunity, and there are many supplements that can help. Vitamin C is an old standby and zinc is an essential cofactor for immune function. Immune-supportive botanicals include astragalus, garlic, ginger, lemon balm, licorice root, rosemary, oregano and Siberian ginseng.

What other gifts from nature supports the immune system? Mushrooms. Yes, mushrooms protect your body like nothing else. They contain beta-glucans, a family of carbohydrates that have been shown to energize immune cells and help them orchestrate a strong response. Mushrooms also nourish the digestive system. Although we don’t usually think of our gastrointestinal tract in terms of immunity, it is actually our first line of defense, with immune cells lining the entire length of our small intestine. Mushroom beta-glucans are also “prebiotics”, supporting the health of the GI lining as well as providing nutrients for our beneficial bacteria.

With immune support in mind for this time of year, I always look to modified citrus pectin (MCP). Made from the pith of citrus fruit peel, MCP has been found to have a strong supportive effect on immunity. Research has shown the ability of MCP to reduce oxidative stress (antioxidant effects) and to positively modulate a variety of immune cells. MCP also binds to heavy metals, removing these damaging toxins from the body.

Our best chance for beating The Let Down Effect is to understand how it works and take active steps to keep balanced during times of elevated stress levels. Simple practices can be very protective:

 1. Make wise food choices
 2. Take time to exercise
 3. Meditate or just breathe

Adding allies from the plant kingdom — botanicals and medicinal mushrooms — can provide further support in reducing stress levels, keeping your body’s fight or flight response at bay, and keeping your immune system strong. Try enjoying the holidays in a more balanced way this year and see if you emerge in better shape for the New Year ahead!

The holiday season often brings unwelcome guests — and no, I’m not talking about friends and family that come in from out of town…

I’m talking about stress and anxiety. The holidays present a dizzying array of demands — parties, shopping, cleaning, baking and entertaining, just to name a few.

Reducing stress in your everyday life is vital for maintaining your overall health, as it can improve your mood, boost immune function, promote longevity and allow you to be more productive. When you let your stress get the best of you, you put yourself at risk of developing a range of illnesses from the common cold to heart disease.

Stress has such a powerful impact on your well-being because it is a natural response that is activated in the brain, which then sends signals that activate a multitude of hormone producing glands to respond. With some practical tips, you can minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays. Let’s examine how this process works, why stress affects you the way it does, and the severe impacts it can have on your health.

The science of stress

When you become stressed, the brain undergoes both chemical and physical changes that affect its overall functioning. During periods of high stress, certain chemicals within the brain, including the neurotransmitters dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine begin to rise, causing larger amounts of these and other “fight-or-flight” hormones, such as adrenalin, to be released by the adrenal glands. The release of these chemicals contributes to certain physiological effects, including rapid heart rate, higher blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. When left unmanaged over time, chronic stress can lead to the development of other serious problems, such as stomach ulcers, stroke, asthma, and heart disease. Learn more about preventing heart disease by downloading my free wellness guide.

Physical effects

Many health care professionals consider chronic stress a significant risk factor for illnesses such as cancer and heart attacks. One reason is that our body’s physical reactions to prolonged stress may accumulate slowly and go unnoticed in our attempts to adapt to ongoing stress. However, even if it seems we’re building a tolerance to stress, our nervous system is still dealing with an overload which can seriously affect overall health in the long run. Stress is also hard on your digestive system. The disruption of your body’s natural digestive processes can cause nausea, pain, vomiting, heartburn, constipation, acid reflux or diarrhea. One easy way to take control of your digestion is by using targeted, time honored herbs and research-based nutraceuticals that can also support immunity, vitality, cognitive health and much more. Learn more about digestive health and digestion support here.

Psychological effects

In addition to the various physical effects of stress, it can also contribute to a number of mental and emotional disorders, including depression, anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks. This emotional stress can make it difficult to focus, make decisions, think things through or remember things. While the many physical effects of stress can be overwhelming, it is important not to ignore these psychological effects as they also play a large part in overall health and vitality.

Stress management techniques

So, what can you do to shift yourself into a healthier pattern and reduce stress? One of the most effective and rewarding techniques is meditation, which encourages you to relax your mind and examine your inner self with a sense of honesty and compassion, rather than judgment and criticism.

Meditation practice helps to let go of old patterns of stress, tension and distraction, and encourages a more spacious and relaxed state where our innate healing capacity can emerge. Meditation also teaches that change comes about by taking small steps and making them part of your life rather than making dramatic leaps that you cannot sustain over time. Committing to just 15 minutes of daily meditation and breathing is a simple step that has profound benefits.

In addition to meditation, don’t forget to….

 1. Engage in regular moderate exercise such as walking, yoga or swimming. These activities have proven stress-reducing benefits, as exercise releases positive stress-busting endorphins and can increase self-confidence and lower the symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. Regular exercise also helps to improve your sleep, which can be compromised by stress, depression and anxiety.
 2. Eat a healthy whole foods diet rich in dark greens, healthy fats and adequate protein. Nutrition is helpful for treating stress. Since chronic stress can strip your body of essential B vitamins, it is important to obtain these nutrients, as well as magnesium and calcium, through diet or supplementation. Whole grains and legumes are good sources of these nutrients.
 3. Avoid caffeine and sugar, as these stimulants can contribute to stress and depression.

Winter can be rough…

It’s cold and damp, people are regularly coming down with viruses, and we often don’t feel like we’re at our best.

The weather keeps us indoors, we’re less physically active, we leave work after dark, and the kids are cooped up. It’s a perfect “storm” for restlessness and a depressive mood.

There are two ways to deal with this: You can spend your days pining for spring, which will come eventually, or you can embrace the winter and make the best of it. Look at it as an opportunity to nourish our inner life, to get in touch with yourself and your loved ones and focus on the quiet process of healing.

Find the sunlight

There is less light during the winter months and our bodies respond accordingly — that’s why some people have trouble with depression during this time. The technical name is seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Sunlight affects a number of critical biochemical reactions including stimulating our pineal gland, a master regulator of numerous hormones. One of those hormones is vitamin D.

Sunlight helps the skin synthesize vitamin D. Many people have a problem with vitamin D deficiency to begin with — we work in offices under artificial light. Winter makes the problem worse, with the sun’s angle reducing the amount and length of sunlight available.

Vitamin D is a true powerhouse, essential for innumerable vital functions such as regulating calcium and phosphorus absorption — critical for bone health; supporting robust immune function — so essential during wintertime viral exposures; helping to maintain a healthy weight; as well as reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Vitamin D supplements can be very helpful when levels are low, so check in with your doctor, and ask to get your Vitamin D level tested. Food sources of vitamin D include salmon, sardines, egg yolk. Many foods are now fortified with vitamin D2. For supplementation, I recommend taking vitamin “D3”.

Focus your energy

You may feel rundown in the winter, regardless of your vitamin D levels. Some of this is simply a result of the “hectic” holidays. But some of it comes from the cold and, again, the reduced sunlight.

Consider how many animals hibernate during the winter months. Of course, humans don’t, but it appears our bodies and our minds slow down as if they’d like to. To some degree, it’s our bodies telling us it’s time to rest and rebuild.

Winter is a particularly important season to find quiet time and focus your energy on healing. There are many ways to do this… Long walks in the woods after a fresh snow. Moving meditations like yoga, qi gong and tai chi. And, of course, sitting meditation.

One of the beauties of meditation is it allows us to think about things without actually thinking about them. Bear with me on this…

Have you ever had problem that you could not resolve, only to have the answer come to you the moment you woke up? Your brain continues to focus on these issues, even when you’re not looking directly at them. Relaxing the mind allows you to integrate and access a deeper “self,” to feel more connected and open hearted. From this place, meditation allows us to get a new perspective on our lives. By focusing on our breathing, we free up our minds to address the issues we buried away under too much work and too many errands. Winter is the best time to do this — it’s like an emotional detox — and it can be profoundly healing.

Rich, warming, healthy foods

One of the beauties of winter is the amazing, hearty meals we can eat.

Nobody wants to heat up the oven when it’s 92 degrees outside, but a nice stew or casserole on a cold day – that’s the stuff. And our bodies need this nourishment.

This is good on a number of levels. These foods are very warming, and the long slow cooking time releases many of the minerals for better absorption. I particularly like lamb, chicken, eggs, root vegetables (which are in season), dark leafy greens, kidney and black beans, walnuts and whole grains. Raw foods, which have a cooling effect, are great in the summer, not so much in the winter.

It’s also important to hold the line, food-wise, this time of year. There are mountains of sweet and fatty foods sweeping through our lives. Enjoy them, but in moderation. These treats can have a dramatically bad impact on our glucose metabolism, leading to energy spikes and mood swings.

And stay hydrated. Winter months can be quite drying, particularly when we have the heat cranked up. Drink eight to ten glasses of water a day. Try it warm, with a squeeze of lemon, which provides better hydration and an alkalinizing effect. Herbal teas provide active herbal constituents as well as hydration.

Supplements and herbs for winter

We already mentioned vitamin D, but there are a number of other botanicals that can help our bodies through the winter.

Mushrooms protect your body like nothing else. They contain beta-glucans, a family of carbohydrates that have been shown to energize immune cells and help them orchestrate a strong response.

Mushrooms also nourish the digestive system. Although we don’t usually think of our gastrointestinal tract in terms of immunity, it is actually our first line of defense with immune cells lining the entire length of our small intestine. Mushroom beta-glucans are also “prebiotics”, supporting the health of the GI lining as well as providing nutrients for our beneficial bacteria.

Culinary mushrooms, such as button, oyster and shiitake, are great ingredients for soups and stews; they all have medicinal qualities. Other medicinal mushrooms such as Coriolus, Ganoderma, Agaricus and Cordyceps have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, valued for their powerful impact in supporting healthy immune function and their adaptogenic qualities, supporting our overall health and well-being during stressful times.

MCP also binds to heavy metals, removing these damaging toxic minerals from the body.

Another important mode of action of MCP is its property of binding to an inflammatory protein called galectin-3, which drives damage to cells and organs, and has been implicated in various disease conditions. As we age, galectin-3 levels tend to rise. MCP, by binding to galectin-3, inhibits its damaging activity to promote a very broad range of healthy aging benefits.

What kind of modified citrus pectin should I take?

Fortunately, MCP is available as a dietary supplement; however, there are a number of types of MCP. The trick is that “modified” means that the size of the fiber molecules have been reduced to a molecular weight that allows good absorption from the GI tract into the circulation for systemic bioactivity. Some forms of MCP still have larger molecules and don’t get absorbed, so they stay in the digestive tract and pass through as a fiber without broad systemic benefits.

PectaSol-C® is the only Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) with nearly two decades of scientific substantiation. The molecular weight is tightly regulated to stay within the range needed for good adsorption. PectaSol-C® Modified Citrus Pectin, is a powerful tool for anyone seeking a safe and effective way to support immune health naturally.

Winter really isn’t so bad

We may all have differing opinions about snow, cold and shorter days, but we can all agree that changing your habits during these times can support your health. So, stay warm, hydrated and nourished. Most of all, try to give yourself the extra time and space to slow down, rest and meditate in this beautiful season of stillness.

Ayurveda refers to the traditional health and healing system of India.

In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda consists of the words ayus, meaning “longevity,” and veda, meaning “science” – together meaning the “science of life.”

The core philosophy is guided by in-depth understanding of the five great elements as recognized by Ayurvedic teachings: air, space, fire, water, and earth. Achieving balance and order in connection with these elements is considered crucial to health and wellness on all levels of being – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Balancing your body

Ayurveda works by balancing the three basic energies, called doshas, which we all possess in unique proportions. Each dosha contains two of the five elements. The three doshas are: vata (air & space), pitta (fire & water), and kapha (water & earth). Each person usually reflects one prominent dosha, and when this dosha becomes imbalanced, the body experiences symptoms and illness related to the dosha’s properties.

Ayurveda uses traditional herbal formulas and personalized diet recommendations, among other modalities, to balance the doshas and reestablish health and wellness. Currently, more than 600 herbal formulas and 250 single plant extracts are used in Ayurveda.

As an integrative medical doctor and healer, I often integrate Ayurveda modalities and principles into my practice. Certain highly-revered Ayurvedic herbs have been shown in scientific studies to be beneficial in promoting healthy metabolic function by addressing blood sugar imbalances and other critical diabetes and metabolic health issues.

Some of these beneficial herbs include gymnema leaf, cassia bark, fenugreek seed, holy basil leaf, jambolan seed, and other natural ingredients, which all work synergistically to balance and maintain a healthy metabolic system, thus helping to prevent and control Metabolic Syndrome and diabetes type 2.

Here are a few of my top recommended Ayurvedic herbs:

1 – Gymnema sylvestre – Studies of the effects of gymnema leaf have demonstrated its ability to support healthy insulin levels. In Hinduism, gymnema is called gurmar, which means “destroyer of sugar,” and research shows that this plant contains substances which decrease the absorption of sugar in the intestine. Gymnema may also increase the amount of insulin in the body and may enhance pancreatic cell growth, further benefiting insulin production in the body, as insulin is made in the pancreas.

2 – Cassia or Cinnamon – Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic health systems have used Cassia cinnamon, or Chinese cinnamon, for thousands of years. Recent research indicates that cinnamon may reduce fasting blood sugar levels, with polyphenols that help maintain insulin sensitivity. It’s one of the oldest known spices that comes from the bark of the cinnamon tree, and is dried and commonly rolled into cinnamon sticks that may be used in tea. Cinnamon can also be ground into a powder and sprinkled on foods for added flavor and spice.

3 – Fenugreek Seed – Several human intervention trials have also shown that fenugreek seeds positively affect metabolic health. Fenugreek seeds have a slightly bitter taste when raw, but when they are sprouted, the flavor becomes pungently sweet, adding a unique taste to salads and other foods. Fenugreek seeds may also be lightly dry roasted to enhance their flavor and reduce their bitterness.

4 – Holy Basil Leaf – Holy basil, called Tulsi in India, is also widely used for a broad range of health conditions, including blood sugar imbalances, and is an essential herb in Ayurveda. Holy basil tea, dried leaves and extracts are widely available and used to aid meditation, correct internal imbalances, and strengthen overall health and well being.

These various herbs have a long tradition of use in Ayurveda, to heal the body and harmonize the mind and spirit. The numerous beneficial compounds found within these botanicals offer strong antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, adaptogenic, and immune-enhancing properties, which effectively promote overall health and support the body’s natural defenses. These time-tested ingredients have been shown in studies to support healthy blood glucose levels, reduce inflammation and help correct imbalances in the body, among other health benefits.

Editor’s note: Are you feeling unusually tired? You may think this is normal aging, but the problem could be your master hormone. When it’s not working, your risk of age-related diseases skyrockets. October is dedicated to breast cancer awareness.

The month is marked with valuable information that is intended to raise visibility about the increasing incidence of breast cancer, and many nonprofit and government organizations provide screening and treatment options to those affected by cancer, information on support services available and educational materials on the importance of early detection.

There is no doubt that there are advocates improving women’s health in the US, however, I’m always struck by what I don’t hear: practical advice on how to keep your breasts protected and healthy all year.

Time magazine published an article highlighting the importance of both nature and nurture in the development of breast cancer…

We sometimes forget about the role our environment plays in our health; from our locally sourced food to our water and air, it all accumulates in our bodies and, specifically, in certain organs. Breast tissue is vulnerable year-round, particularly to environmental toxins as well as to our dietary habits. This is partly because breasts are primarily composed of fatty tissue, which can store fat soluble toxins.

Breast tissue is also highly sensitive to chemicals known to cause endocrine (hormone) disruptions, and many of them are found in environmental pollution. Plus, breast cells are some of the more rapidly dividing cells in the body, putting them at a higher risk for mutations.

Toxins

Many environmental toxins are not very water soluble. In fact, they absorb into lipids (fats), so they tend to accumulate in fatty tissues throughout the body. Breast tissue has a high fat content, as breasts are composed of ducts and glands surrounded by fatty tissue. As women age and sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone levels decrease, the glandular tissue diminishes and there is a corresponding increase in fatty tissue.

Pesticides and other chemicals, as well as heavy metals, tend to gravitate toward these fatty tissues. High levels of toxins have been found in numerous studies to be present in both breast tissue and breast milk.

Interestingly, countries that have banned specific chemicals such as DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and other dangerous pesticides have seen a corresponding drop in breast milk concentrations. Even with the ban however, many of these chemicals, known as “POPs” (Persistent Organic Pollutants), can remain in the environment for decades and continue to bioaccumulate up the food chain, from plants to humans. Decreasing the levels of these toxic chemicals takes many years and lots of effort from local, state and federal organizations.

The Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC) states that there are over 80,000 chemicals registered for use in the U.S. and very few of them have been tracked or studied. We have seen a reduction of certain chemicals in breast milk samples, but have also seen an alarming rise in other chemicals such as brominated flame retardants, known as PBDE’s. Bromine has similar properties to the essential nutrient iodine, including how it binds to compounds in the body. When bromine is introduced, it can block thyroid iodine receptors and therefore, thyroid function suffers. Bromine is also commonly used in commercial flour and baked goods and numerous other packaged food products, as well as in pool chemicals.

Bacteria

Another critical factor in breast health is bacteria. Bacteria that live in the body, known as the microbiome, influence many diseases. Most research has been done on the “gut” microbiome in the digestive tract, but researchers have long suspected that a “microbiome” exists within breast tissue and plays a role in breast cancer.

In a newly published study, Cleveland Clinic researchers found distinct microbial differences in healthy and cancerous breast tissue when they compared breast tissue of healthy women to women with breast cancer. The research team has discovered for the first time that healthy breast tissue contains more of the bacterial species Methylobacterium, a finding which could offer a new perspective in the battle against breast cancer. The study provides proof-of-principle evidence to support further research into the creation of targeted treatments of these pro-cancer bacteria.

Hormone imposters

In addition to toxic chemicals, there is a group of chemicals with another dangerous trait. Known as endocrine disruptors, environmental estrogens, or xenoestrogens, this group of chemicals mimic estrogen and other hormones and trick the body into “using” them instead of naturally occurring hormones.

These estrogen imposters produce excessive stimulation to hormone sensitive tissues. Cells comprised of specific hormone-sensitive tissues, such as breast, uterine and testicular tissue, have receptor sites on their cell surface for specific hormones. These receptors have a definite shape, and like a lock and key mechanism, the hormone fits snugly into the receptor which “opens the door”, allowing a signal to enter the cell and give instructions to the cell nucleus. The shape of environmental estrogen chemicals is similar enough to the native hormone that they can fit into the receptor and activate the cell, producing excessive growth and disrupting the body’s complex communication network. Studies in animals from contaminated lakes and streams have seen reproductive changes that seriously hamper normal reproduction, producing offspring with “feminizing” organ development and other serious developmental issues.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has just published a list of the top chemicals found to be endocrine disruptors – called “The Dirty Dozen.” You can read about these chemicals and where they are most commonly found, here.

Year-round breast support

Before embarking on a new breast health program this month, it’s important you be aware of toxins in your surroundings, including food and water supply as well as household products, and anything else you apply to your skin. This is particularly critical for breast health. Water filters, organic whole food, and natural home and body products are an excellent start.

Next on the list is adding foods and supplements that help remove chemicals and heavy metals. The plant kingdom is a great ally in our efforts to keep breasts toxin free. Sulfur-containing foods, such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, onions and garlic, all contain compounds which aid in detoxification. Modified citrus pectin, derived from the pith of citrus peels, easily enters the circulation and has been shown in human studies to safely remove heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium lead and arsenic from the blood.

I also recommend a researched combination of botanical compounds including DIM (diindolylmethane from cruciferous vegetables), curcumin, quercetin, astragalus, and medicinal mushrooms. This formula provides powerful support for healthy breast cell behavior, immune function and hormone balance.

As always, a proactive, multi-faceted, integrative approach is the best way to support long term health. And for the men reading this article, this applies to you as well! I encourage you take steps this year to protect and enhance the health of your breasts and other hormone sensitive tissues.

Have you ever thought about how fast or how slow you walk?

The next time you go check your mailbox or get something from the kitchen, take note.

Why? Because research shows that the slower you walk, the shorter your lifespan might be.

You might chalk that up to a few reasons, but I find this the most concerning…

An important new study looked at the association between cadmium levels in blood and urine, and walking speed, a measure of physical performance and mobility. They studied U.S. adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999 to 2002) who were 50 years of age or older, and measured the length of time it took them to walk 20 feet.

What they found gives us all reason for concern. Cadmium concentrations in blood were associated with slower gait speed. Another study published this year found a significant association between cadmium levels and hypertension, and yet another 2017 publication found blood cadmium levels associated with increased markers of inflammation associated with cardiovascular disease.

These findings add to the growing volume of evidence supporting cadmium’s toxicity even at low levels of exposure.

How are you exposed to cadmium?

Cadmium is a soft, silver-white metal usually found associated with zinc, lead and copper ores. Salts of cadmium -cadmium chloride and sulfate are soluble in water and can enter the environment and food supply.

And you might be surprised how frequently you could be exposed to it…

Smoking and passive cigarette smoke: According to the CDC, cadmium exposure occurs through several routes. Cigarette smoking is a primary route, as the tobacco plant very efficiently takes up cadmium for the environment. Measurement of cadmium levels in body tissues confirms that smoking roughly doubles cadmium body burden in comparison to not smoking.

Workplace exposure: Cadmium exposure in the workplace takes place during mining or work with cadmium containing ores and during manufacture of products containing cadmium such as paints, batteries and plastics. Work such as plating, soldering, and welding are sources of work exposure.

Environmental exposure: Cadmium gets into soil, water, and air by metal mining and refining, manufacture and application of phosphate fertilizers, fossil fuel combustion, and waste incineration and disposal. Cadmium exists in air as particles or vapors and can be transported long distances in the atmosphere, where it will deposit onto soils and water surfaces. Cadmium binds strongly to organic matter and is taken up by plant life, eventually, entering the food supply, and soluble forms dissolve in water.

Our food supply: For most of us, nonsmokers and those who don’t work in impacted jobs, exposure comes via ingestion of foods that have been grown on soils with high cadmium levels. Leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach, potatoes and grains, peanuts, soybeans, and sunflower seeds can contain high levels of cadmium. Fish and shellfish can also contain significant cadmium. If you do not have enough iron or other nutrients in your diet, you are likely to take up more cadmium from your food than usual.

Negative impacts of low level exposure on body systems

Most of the cadmium that enters your body goes to your kidney and liver and can remain there for many years. A small portion of the cadmium that enters your body leaves slowly in urine and feces. Your body can change some of the cadmium to a form that is not harmful, but too much cadmium can overload the ability of your liver and kidneys and cause damage to these organs.

Exposure to lower levels of cadmium for a long time can also cause bones to become fragile and break easily. Anemia, liver disease, and nerve or brain damage have been observed in animals eating or drinking cadmium. We have no good information on people to indicate what cadmium levels people would need to eat or drink to result in these diseases, or how levels correlate to severity of increase risk. We know that cadmium has been recognized as a human carcinogen.

How to reduce your exposure

Blood or urine testing are very accurate if you suspect current or ongoing exposure. Urine testing can indicate past exposure as well. Hair or nails can also measure exposure but is subject to external contamination which can give falsely elevated levels.

Whether you’re tested or not, you should still cut down on your risk of exposure…

 • Avoid smoking and exposure to passive cigarette smoke.
 • If you work in an occupation that may exposure you, wear protective equipment and bathe and change clothes before going home.
 • Check local fish advisories before consuming fish or shellfish from local water.
 • Dispose of nickel cadmium batteries properly – recycle in appropriate area.
 • Properly dispose of paints at your local recycling or waste disposal site.

What else can we do to protect ourselves?

As a physician specializing in integrative medicine and detoxification, I have long been aware of the daily and cumulative burden of multiple heavy metals from multiple sources that is the fact of our modern life. I consider it a true health crisis which is poorly recognized. We don’t know how even low levels of exposure on an ongoing basis to multiple heavy metals and other toxins adversely impact our health over the long term.

In my practice, I always recommend dietary choices which support the body’s natural systems of detoxification including phytonutrient rich and nutrient dense choices such as colorful fruits and vegetables, cruciferous vegies, legumes and organic protein sources.

In the case of heavy metals, “organic” is not a guarantee of protection, so additional supplement support is needed to bind and remove these compounds. I have seen in my practice over many years the high prevalence of metal exposure in my patients and the improvements seen with a detoxification program.

A combination of natural polysaccharide fibers, especially pectins, and alginates from seaweed, are known to bind to heavy metals and toxins, allowing their removal from the body. Such a combination can be found in PectaClear®. Combining modified citrus pectin with sodium alginates can greatly assist in the removal of cadmium and other heavy metals both from the systemic circulation and the digestive tract. Given our ongoing exposures, a daily detoxification support is a very important protective intervention.

Don’t delay! Stay hydrated, eat well, exercise, reduce your exposures, compliment with toxin removal compounds — simple solutions in a complex world.

You are what you eat.

You probably hear that all the time, but are you taking that advice to heart?

Most of us don’t… Our most popular meals are highly inflammatory, like fast and processed foods that use refined flour, sugar and factory-farmed red meat, all known to increase inflammation.

If you factor in alcohol, caffeine, stress and exhaustion, you get a perfect storm for chronic inflammation and the many degenerative conditions it can fuel.

But what is the common denominator here? All of these conditions start with food choices. Good health starts with what you choose to eat, and while this sounds simple enough, people struggle with making better choices.

Simple choices make a big impact

Inflammation is the body’s natural protection and repair response to germs, toxins, environmental pollutants, injury and illness, but when it becomes chronic or out of control, inflammation shows its other side. Acute, but infrequent inflammation can be healthy. The same is true of stress. Both help to “wake up” the system to respond to dangers.

But if inflammation or stress continues to progress unchecked, a cascade of detrimental biochemical reactions can occur that eat away at your health… damaging cells, including DNA, cell membranes, and mitochondria, the vital structures inside each cell that produce energy. Chronic inflammation can also drive uncontrolled scar tissue build up (fibrosis), leading to reduced organ function in vital organs such as the heart, kidney and liver. It can also contribute to autoimmune conditions whose incidence is on the rise.

The key is understanding inflammation and making the right lifestyle adjustments. By harnessing a combination of diet, exercise, mindfulness and targeted supplements, we can reduce our risks for cancer, cardiovascular disease and numerous other conditions. In the long run, these simple changes can increase overall health to help us not only live longer, but live better with more energy and vitality for the things that keep us going.

One easy and simple change that anyone can make now is to add scientifically proven natural supplements into their diet to support their health.

Supported by science

Researchers at Dharma Biomedical, LLC and the Department of Pathology, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, FL just released a new peer reviewed study showing synergistic beneficial effects of two natural compounds, Modified Citrus Pectin and Honokiol.

Honokiol, extracted from magnolia bark (Magnolia officinalis), possesses multiple biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, antidepressant, and neuroprotective properties. It has already been shown in preclinical studies to be an effective multifunctional antioxidant.

Modified citrus pectin (MCP) is a well-investigated compound derived from citrus peels that is recommended as a dietary supplement for immune support, heavy metal detoxification, antifibrotic effects as well as its role in promoting healthy cell function. The mechanism of action of MCP is that it works as a competitive inhibitor of extracellular galectin-3 (Gal-3), a protein that drives the inflammatory and fibrotic process. MCP blocks Gal-3 activity, reducing chemical signaling pathways that lead to chronic tissue inflammation and fibrosis.

The evidence shows the potential benefits for prevention and treatment of inflammation-associated chronic diseases. When MCP and Honokiol were combined, the study demonstrated significantly better effects than the single compounds due to the synergistic effects on antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory properties.

Feed good health

In addition to incorporating natural supplements into your anti-inflammatory lifestyle, you should reduce or eliminate inflammatory ingredients from your diet – white flour, high glycemic and processed foods, trans fats, grilled meats, and fried foods. Replace with an emphasis on anti-inflammatory foods including whole, nutrient-dense foods like sprouted grains and legumes, lean proteins, healthy fats, green leafy vegetables, bright colored fruits like berries and mango, culinary herbs and spices, and lots of filtered water.

High fiber foods such as whole grains and legumes will help detoxify the body, keep elimination regular and reduce inflammation. Brightly colored fruits and green leafy vegetables are both high in phytonutrients and antioxidants which help scavenge harmful free radical molecules, detoxify the body and fight inflammation, while offering numerous other protective benefits.

I particularly recommend alkaline vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli and avocado, which help control acidity in the body, as well as reduce toxins. Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, and cabbage are rich in sulfur compounds, which slow inflammation and support joint and tissue health.

For protein, choose sprouted legumes, eggs from pasture-raised hens, and organic meats or fatty fish, such as salmon and sardines These fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which provide both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support. Omega 3’s can reduce the joint pain associated with both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and have also been linked to improved cardiovascular, pulmonary and psychological – emotional health. Omega 3’s are also found in walnuts, flax, and chia seed.

For those who cannot bear the morning without hot caffeinated beverage, expand your repertoire to include not only coffee but also green or black teas. Tea is rich in antioxidants and polyphenol compounds that reduce inflammation, support immunity and promote numerous other areas of health.

Activity

One of the unique things about cartilage is that it gets very little blood flow. The movement of our joints lubricates cartilage, brings in nutrients and eliminates waste. For that reason and many others, movement is an important component to preventing inflammation and supporting health.

I am a fan of gentle activity over strenuous work outs that can damage muscles and joints. Walking and swimming are excellent ways to increase circulation and lubricate the joints.

Exercise also serves another important function: It reduces stress, which is a major contributor to chronic inflammation. Long-term anxiety increases production of stress hormones, such as cortisol, which feed inflammation. As a result, anything we do to control stress reduces this inflammatory environment and supports both joint and overall health.

In addition to gentle exercise, I also recommend mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques, such as meditation, which have been shown to improve both mental and physical health and control inflammation. There are also moving meditations, such as yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, which combine the benefits of movement with mindfulness.

I recently posted an article detailing how eating your greens, like spinach and kale, are scientifically proven to offer even more health benefits. Most people associate green leafy vegetables with weight management but it is more than that; data from this study showed that these greens could also keep people cognitively fit because of a key nutrient: lutein.

While I was happy to share this excellent news with you, there’s more…

Throughout the past decades, a substantial body of research has continued to demonstrate the potential therapeutic effects of bioactive phytochemicals found in plants. Recently published research has identified several natural compounds found in food as key ingredients that could support prostate health!

When you dine on curry and baked apples, for example, enjoy the fact that you are eating something that could play a role in inhibiting — or even preventing — cancer. Natural compounds found in turmeric, apple peels and red grapes, were found to be key ingredients that could thwart the growth of prostate cancer.

The research was performed by The University of Texas at Austin. The new paper uses a novel analytical approach to screen numerous plant-based chemicals instead of testing a single agent, thus discovering specific combinations that target prostate cancer cells. One of the key takeaways from this new research paper is that the compounds work synergistically to benefit prostate health. This approach is an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other traditional medical systems. Now we have the benefit of a growing body of literature providing solid scientific support.

As a TCM practitioner for over 20 years I have successfully worked with thousands of patients and created targeted formulas using a combination of specific nutrients, botanicals and medicinal mushrooms specifically designed to support prostate cellular and immune health, gentle liver detoxification and healthy hormonal balance.

As an integrative physician who has worked with hundreds of patients with prostate issues over the years I found this study to be incredibly interesting and relevant.

I’d like to share with you some of the lessons that I think can be learned…

As men age, their prostate gland often enlarges in response to metabolic and hormonal changes as well as inflammation.

This condition often results in uncomfortable symptoms including a weak stream of urine, difficulty starting urination, a sense of not fully emptying the bladder, leaking of urine, more frequent urination and a strong and sudden desire to urinate, especially at night.

To help improve symptoms, men are often prescribed an alpha blocker, such as Tamsulosin (Flomax) which relaxes the prostate smooth muscle and improves urination or other drugs such as Proscar (Finasteride) or Avodart (Dutasteride), which work by reducing prostate volume, thus improving urinary function.

The study, which appeared in the June 2017 issue of the journal, Hormones Molecular Biology and Clinical Investigations, followed two groups, one group of men with BPH who were prescribed Avodart and a second group who were prescribed Tamsulosin (an alpha blocker). Extensive data, including blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), liver function enzymes and quality of life questionnaires were collected on these two groups for 36-42 months. Here’s what they found…

The study results

The positive findings were that long-term treatment with Avodart (Dutasteride) was associated with significant improvements in lower urinary tract symptoms in men with BPH, with reduction in prostate volume.

However, findings showed that Avodart had significant negative health impacts. One of the authors, Abdulmaged M. Traish, MBA, PhD, professor of biochemistry and urology at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) concluded: “We believe our findings suggest that Avodart has a negative impact on men’s overall health since it increases blood sugar and A1C and also increases blood lipids. The increase in blood glucose and A1C may predispose men to diabetes and the increase in lipids may predispose them to NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). Most importantly, this agent worsens sexual function and reduces quality of life.”

None of these negative impacts was seen in the group taking Tamsulosin.

The Boston University School of Medicine Researchers who conducted the research believe the data from this study and those reported by others in animal models, as well as in other clinical studies, strongly suggest that Avodart may have serious adverse side effects that were not obvious several years ago.

These findings emphasize the importance of ongoing research, even for well-established and widely used medications. New findings should inform the conversation that you have with your health care provider. The researchers strongly recommended that physicians discuss with their patients these potential serious adverse effects of long-term Dutasteride therapy prior to instituting this form of treatment.

When talking with your health care provider about this medication for BPH, some good questions to ask include: Why do you specifically need this medication? What are the alternative medicines available and what is the current research on their safety and effectiveness? How long does your physician expect you to take Avodart? Will this medication create conflicts with other medicines you take? And most importantly, are there other natural supplement options you can try?

Empower yourself

I always encourage my patients to be informed participants in their own healing journey, even if the issues are not always easy to sort out.

Sorting through any published research to find answers can be a challenge, and I’m sure this debate will continue. It’s actually a good thing, a necessary and healthy activity in the fast-growing field of integrative medicine. It is an art as well as a science, but luckily, we have a growing integrative medicine community on our side.

As an integrative physician with extensive training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, I like to suggest botanical and nutritional approaches to promote and maintain healthy prostate function, along with exercise, healthy diet, and stress control with practices such as meditation and chi gong.

Oftentimes these natural options can be quite effective when used alone or in conjunction with Western medical approaches. I encourage you to keep reading, staying informed and asking questions.

It depends on who you ask, but most people would say cleanliness is very important.

The amount of money we spend on germ-killing cleaning supplies should tell us a bit about how we feel about bacteria.

These common household products such as soaps, detergents, health and skincare products and cleaners contain antibacterial agents to disinfect surfaces and eliminate potentially harmful bacteria.

What exactly is an antibacterial agent? According to Tufts University, an antibacterial is an agent that interferes with the growth and reproduction of bacteria.

So, antibacterials are a good thing, right? We all like to stay clean and maintain good health by avoiding bacteria that can wreak havoc on our bodies.

Well, antibacterials may not be a clear-cut solution to cleanliness…

A solution or a bigger problem?

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists have discovered that exposure to environmental levels of triclocarban (TCC), an antibacterial chemical common in personal care products — like soaps and lotions for home use, as well as in the medical field — can transfer from mother to offspring and interfere with lipid metabolism.

You may be thinking, what is lipid metabolism? Well, lipids are naturally occurring molecules that include fats, waxes, fat-soluble vitamins, monoglycerides, diglycerides, and triglycerides. Their main biological function is to store energy and act as structural components of cell membranes. This study’s findings show that the antibacterial components (or TCC) in these common products can interfere with the main biological function of lipids.

TCC is among the top 10 most commonly detected wastewater contaminants in concentration and frequency. But now, this study helps us to understand how TCC exposure can be passed on during development. “Early life exposure to TCC has the potential to cause irreversible outcomes due to the fragile nature of organ systems and protective mechanisms in developing offspring,” LLNL biologist Heather Enright said.

Making peace with bacteria

Nowadays, we are all happy to disinfect our homes and bodies but don’t think about the effects these decisions may have on our bodies and others.

Bacteria come in many variations, and not all bacteria are bad; some bacteria are good and can help support natural functions within the body, like digestion.

In fact, the latest research shows that beneficial bacteria residing in our digestive system are vitally important to our health from the time we exit the birth canal. A recently published study found that the process of establishing the gut microbiota in newborns and children is affected by various environmental factors, with the potential to be a main determinant of life-long health, including the importance of various factors related to the development of the immune system and allergic diseases later in life.

Supplements and certain foods are available to offer aid to beneficial bacteria, such as fermented vegetables, yogurts and other probiotics.

I recommend a specific supplement blend for digestive support that offers both acute relief from digestive discomfort such as nausea, heartburn and bloating, as well as providing long term support by strengthening and regulating digestive function, promoting better absorption of nutrients, supporting immunity and increasing antioxidant activity.

In ancient medical systems from many cultures, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, healthy digestion has long been regarded as the foundation of good health and longevity. Now we know that we are sharing with a host of resident organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi that are working hard to keep the peace and ward of disease causing organisms. By keeping ourselves in balance with nature, we can avoid the need for overuse of antibacterial chemicals with their potential long-term consequences.

When you’re trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, you often focus on things like building muscles and maintaining a healthy weight.

But there’s something very important we often overlook — frankly, because we don’t realize our actions can have much effect on it.

It’s the tiniest but most essential part of what makes you tick — your precious genetic code, residing deep in the heart of each and every cell.

Your miraculous DNA

Most people think DNA sets everything in stone, but research is showing how environment, diet, lifestyle and even thoughts and emotions can have a powerful an impact on gene function

That means your DNA expression can be influenced by a number of factors that you can modify, including nutrient intake, exercise and hormonal alterations due to stress and toxin exposures.

Forces that damage your DNA can produce errors in the genetic code, making the body operate poorly and even lead to disease. For example, cancer cells have multiple DNA mutations. But the list does not end with cancer; there are many conditions that can result when our genetic code goes awry.

One of the miracles of DNA is that more errors don’t occur. Each time a cell divides, it replicates three billion DNA base pairs. That’s a lot of opportunity for mistakes.

Fortunately, another miracle of DNA is that your cells have profoundly complex error correction mechanisms that spot problems and halt cell division until they are fixed. Sometimes, if the mistake is irreparable, cells can self-destruct, a process called apoptosis. This final resort mechanism is not functional, however, in cancer cells which then go on to replicate, leading to unlimited cell growth.

Fighting Free Radicals to Protect DNA Integrity

One of the ways DNA, cells, and tissues become damaged is when there is oxidative stress due to free radicals. When an atom or molecule loses an electron, it becomes a free radical. To recover that electron, a free radical scavenges from other atoms or molecules, creating a domino effect.

This destructive process, called oxidative stress, is a normal part of human biology, and your body, once again, has elaborate systems in place, including a wide array of antioxidant compounds to counteract damage.

However, this protective network is not inexhaustible and constant insults combined with nutrient insufficiencies can deplete your inherent protective mechanisms. A wide variety of chemicals, heavy metals and other insults, are known to increase oxidative stress, making detoxification important…

Protective Strategies

In my practice, I recommend a two-pronged approach to detoxification — ongoing gentle detox combined with a deeper, more focused seasonal detoxification.

The first step is to have a clean foundational diet: lean proteins, whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats and oils.

Many foods support detoxification, including a wide array of vegetables, especially those in the cruciferous vegetable family, such as broccoli, kale, etc. Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchee are full of beneficial bacteria and enzymes. A healthy microbiome is now being recognized as a foundational aspect of health, which underscores the importance of including these foods that provide prebiotic and probiotic support. Seaweed and other sea vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals needed as cofactors to support detoxification pathways.

Removing heavy metals and toxins from the body is not an easy matter, and this is the reason for the second approach…

Toxins, the generators of oxidative stress, often store in fatty tissue, bone and vital organs. Fortunately there are natural compounds that have been shown in research studies to bind to these toxins and promote their elimination. Modified citrus pectin (MCP) and alginates are two natural compounds that I use extensively in my practice for this purpose. MCP also binds galectin-3, an inflammatory protein that has been implicated in many serious chronic conditions, so maintaining healthy Galectin-3 levels is an important added benefit.

PectaClear, which contains both MCP and alginates, is an ideal formula because the MCP is absorbed into the circulation to exert systemic detoxification effects, while the alginates, derived from brown kelp, are too large to be absorbed and stay in the digestive tract where they bind to incoming toxins from our water supply, food and beverages. Alginates have been shown to remove radioactive particles, such as iodine and cesium, as well as chemicals and heavy metals. Keep in mind that even organic produce can have heavy metal and toxin contamination from soil, air and water. This is why I strongly recommend daily use to continuously remove these offenders.

As a long-time practitioner of Traditional Chinese medicine, detoxing is something I undertake in my personal life and recommend to my patients.

We can’t really see DNA, so it can seem abstract, but it couldn’t get more essential! By making a few simple lifestyle changes, adopting meditation and stress reduction practices, a healthy diet, and ongoing gentle detoxification we are way ahead in preserving our genetic code and positively influencing how are genes are expressed promoting our health and longevity.

Interim results of an ongoing Clinical Trial using modified citrus pectin (MCP) have just been published, showing impressive and promising results for men whose prostate cancer has recurred after surgical or radiation treatment.

This is a difficult condition to treat, so this news gives hope to thousands of men worldwide who have very few options.

The main form of monitoring is to test blood levels of prostate specific antigen, (PSA) on a regular basis; it should remain at undetectable levels.

PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland in very small amounts. A rising PSA beyond normal limits indicates a need to investigate the prostate further. Elevated PSA, in addition to indicating possible prostate cancer, can also result from chronic inflammation and infection, posing another complication in interpreting PSA results.

In men who have had prostate cancer, when the PSA starts to rise, this is an indication that the cancer has returned, and is called “biochemical relapse.” The rate at which blood PSA levels rise, called the PSA doubling time, is an indication of how aggressive the cancer growth is. So a rapid PSA doubling time is not good news, indicating increasing rate of growth.

Men from multiple cancer centers in Israel were referred to Meir Hospital where this groundbreaking study in integrative approaches to cancer treatment was conducted.

MCP demonstrated the ability to slow the PSA doubling time in 79% of the men taking the supplement, and in 62% of participants, the cancer didn’t grow or got smaller. The results are reported based on 6 months of data from the first 35 patients enrolled.

“This study confirmed the results seen in two previous smaller studies,” Says Dr. Moshe Frenkel, co-investigator of the trial and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and director of the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Unit in the Institute of Oncology in Meir Medical Center. “We are constantly looking for natural options that affect cancer progression with minimal side effects. Based on the intermediary findings of the study, MCP has the potential to fall into this category with patients affected by prostate cancer.”

MCP is extracted from the pith of citrus fruit peels and undergoes a modification process that enables it to be absorbed from the digestive tract into the general circulation where it exerts beneficial effects throughout the body.

MCP has undergone numerous preclinical (animal) studies that have demonstrated its usefulness for diverse indications, from inflammatory and fibrotic diseases that affect multiple organs to cancer and immunity. Now we are seeing very significant results in this human clinical study that support earlier studies.

Word is spreading and MCP has become an increasingly popular essential daily nutritional supplement both for those with chronic conditions and for people who are interested in strategies for healthy aging. Who would have thought that the peel of citrus fruit would become famous for its health promoting effects?

Did your mother always tell you to eat your vegetables while you were growing up?

Most kids hated being told to eat green things, but guess what? Your mother was right (like always). Eating your greens is scientifically proven to offer numerous health benefits.

While spinach and kale are favorites of those looking to stay physically fit, a study from the University of Illinois just released data that shows these green, leafy vegetables could also keep people cognitively fit…

Feed your brain lutein

The study, which included 60 adults aged 25 to 45, found that middle-aged participants with higher levels of lutein — a nutrient found in green leafy vegetables, avocado and eggs — had neural responses that were more on par with younger individuals.

And most interest was that their neural responses were higher when compared to their low-lutein peers, insinuating they were able to engage more of their brain power.

Anne Walk, a postdoctoral scholar and first author of the paper said, “Lutein appears to have some protective role, since the data suggest that those with more lutein were able to engage more cognitive resources to complete the task.” Lutein is a nutrient that the body can’t make on its own, so it must be acquired through diet. Lutein accumulates in brain tissues, as well as in the eye. So, come on — no more excuses! It is time to eat your green, leafy veggies.

Even your brain loves cherries

How about some cherry juice?

A recent study published in the European Journal of Nutrition (2017) found that intake of cherry juice containing high levels of a type of dietary flavonoid — anthocyanins — Improved verbal fluency, and short and long term memory in a group of older adults with mild to moderate dementia, after only 12 weeks of consumption.

We can add lutein and cherry juice to our growing tool basket of nutrients for brain health. But we can’t forget about botanicals…

Protect your brain

Very promising results in studies on brain health and cognitive function, show botanicals such as curcumin and honokiol, a purified extract from the bark of the Magnolia tree (Magnolia officinalis), are very much worth considering.

These two botanicals been found to have highly protective cellular health effects in brain tissue, and may even have regenerative effects. Many compounds that are beneficial to other body systems are too large to get into the brain.

Honokiol, however, has a very small molecular size and structure, which allows it to cross the blood-brain barrier. Honokiol has antioxidant effects which may contribute to its neuroprotective benefits. It also interacts with GABA receptors in the brain and may help support a healthy mood and promote relaxation.

Nature has truly provided us with an abundance of natural compounds with untold health benefits. Some are delicious, and some, well, are just good for us. Be smart and stay smart through all the stages of your very precious life by incorporating foods and unique targeted supplements into your daily routine.
